a. Cultural Resources
(1) All archaeological sites in need of protection will have boundaries initially
marked with pink and black striped flagging. Those areas needing protection during
Timber Sale activities will have boundaries marked with white marking paint in
accordance with FSH 2409.12, section 71.21.
Information on cutting unit boundaries and maps showing site locations will be
provided by the districts to the zone or district archaeologist in a timely manner
allowing archaeological site boundaries to be marked prior to(or simultaneously with)
marking unit boundaries.
The Zone or District Archaeologist will determine which sites will need boundaries
marked.
(2) All timber sale contracts will use Washington Office special provision CT6.24# SITE SPECIFIC SPECIAL PROTECTION MEASURES, to protect the integrity of
archaeological sites. According to this provision, cultural areas will not be shown on
the Sale Area Map but a description of how they are marked on the ground will be
included. This provision and BT6.24 will assure that no ground disturbing activities
occur within the cultural sites.
(3) Each Zone or District Archaeologist will provide the District Timber Management
Assistant (or his/her acting) with a list of archaeological sites and a site location map
for the Timber Sale Area. This information will be stored in the pre-sale folder and
will be available to or distributed to sale preparation and sale administration
personnel for field use. Sale Administration personnel will inform purchasers of
cultural site locations prior to beginning work in the Sale Area.
(4) All Temporary Roads outside cutting units must be approved by the Zone or
District Archaeologist who will determine if additional survey or mitigation is
necessary.
