Checking for Contract Compliance. Supervisors of marking crews will make frequent checks on all sales to assure that areas producing less than the minimum volume per acre for any product are not being included in the sale. Minimum operable volume may vary dependent on product, type of harvest, and District. 2. Marking for Check Estimating. Provisions must be made at the time the sale is marked to identify sample trees to be used for check estimating. All sample trees or "tally trees" will have the following tally information on the tree bole progressing downward from DBH: a. DBH (last digit only). b. Number of 8 ft. sticks. c. Percent of defect d. Markers identification number. When marking multiple products in one tree, the following information will be shown on the "tally tree" progressing downward from DBH: a. DBH (last digit only) b. Number of 8 ft. sticks of sawlogs and adjacent to that is the defect in percent. c. Third number is topwood height and adjacent to that is the defect. d. Markers identification number. Any sale that is marked by other than certified timber estimators must be checked. Volume estimate checks made on sales will be made by the appropriate Zone Forest Check Cruiser. Frequency and Standards are found in FSH 2409.12 Chapter 60. The Forest Supervisor may request a check on any sale should the need arise. 3. Marking Additional Timber. Additional timber is usually marked by sale adminstrators during routine sale adminstration inspections. This "added" volume must be independently checked by personnel other than those who marked it. The assigned FSR will be responsible for appropriate spot checks and audit of any additional volume marked by the Sale Adminstrator. Results of this check folder. Coordination between the SA and FSR during active sale adminstration duties will be critical, so the FSR (or his designate) can audit add on volumes in a timely manner and not encumber the contractor's operations.
