The SGT6-5000F:
world class reliability – truly multitalented
Continuous flexibility, high performance and reliability, high
efficiency, and superior environmental indicators are the requirements for electricity production today. Meeting these challenges
is no problem for the SGT6-5000F and it’s various packages.
We are consistently working to make it even better, which is
why the SGT6-5000F is one of the best in class.
6
Flexibility that enables you to react with
maximum efficiency
The need for flexible power generation has increased
dramatically over the years. The SGT6-5000F is the right
choice to meet those ever-changing energy demands.
The unique turbine design is always biased toward high
efficiency values. But in applications where power has
the absolute top priority, we can rapidly increase power
output by an additional 10 percent with Shaping PowerTM
– this provides operating flexibility to respond to
changing grid demands without impacting part life.
And to provide even more flexibility the SGT6-5000F with
Shaping Power TM can also operate in “max efficiency”
mode with reduced fuel consumption.
The SGT6-5000F achieves short and cost-efficient startup
times thanks to the fast start option. You can produce
power for the grid in five minutes and generate 150 MW
in ten minutes from turning gear speed. While connected
to the grid, the gas turbine can ramp at 30 MW/min –
with no service penalty. The low-load turndown option
provides you with the flexibility to reduce load down to
> 40 percent of gas turbine base load while maintaining
emissions compliance. This gives you the benefits of
remaining cost-effectively connected to the grid with
reduced fuel costs during off-peak hours, while also
avoiding startup and shutdown costs. You are therefore
able to respond more quickly to changing grid demands.
You can always rely on the SGT6-5000F for consistent
performance with low emissions and high flexibility
in operation.
Environmental friendliness that allows you
to set benchmarks
With 9 ppm NOx without water injection and less than
4 ppm CO, the SGT6-5000F boasts the lowest emission
values today. We achieve this through the Ultra Low NOx
(ULN) combustion system.

Its success proves us right
Since its market launch in 1993, the SGT6-5000F has
demonstrated world-class reliability. An operating fleet
of 245 turbines with cumulative fired hours exceeding
nine million and a fleet reliability of consistently
99 percent speaks for itself. The SGT6-5000F’s world
class reliability is achieved through proven technology,
low F-class firing temperatures, and the use of conventionally cast alloys in the turbine. Despite its low firing
temperature, the SGT6-5000F packages deliver highlevel efficiency. However, the SGT6-5000F excels not
only in worldwide service, but also with remarkable
performance parameters. Best of all, as the core package
component, the SGT6-5000F also influences the equally
exceptional performance of the packages in simple cycle
as well as combined cycle applications.
Versatility you can count on
The SGT6-5000F is the basic component in numerous
different concepts in the area of fossil electricity generation. In the 60-Hz market, it is the first choice for simple
cycle and combined cycle operation with or without
integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), combined
heat and power (cogeneration), and repowering. The
13-stage high-efficiency compressor and four-stage
turbine are on one central tie bolt rotor with Hirth
serration. The SGT6-5000F is designed to use a wide
range of different fuels. It runs on natural gas, lowor medium-calorific BTU gas, as well as on distillate oils –
and there is no need to shut down the turbine when
switching from gas to liquid fuel.
7
The SST6-5000:
full steam ahead for your project
Fifty-six machines under contract, and about 13,000
installed MW. These figures speak for themselves –
and for our extensive experience. We’ve developed the
SST6-5000 especially for operation in combined cycle
power plants and steam power plants for 60 Hz.
Customized designs you can count on
The SST6-5000 combines short startup times with high
operating performance. It consists of a combined highpressure/medium-pressure section and a double-flow
low-pressure section available in two models: high level
(exhaust flow downwards) and low level (exhaust flow
on one or two sides). Thanks to its modular design, the
SST6-5000 is as f lexible as your project requires, and can
be adapted to meet your project specific thermal cycle
needs. The turbine has been designed to minimize assembly
and commissioning costs and to reduce technical and
commercial risks for the project. Due to the customized
design of the blade path, the SST6-5000 can offer
you a range of power outputs from 120 to 600 MW.
On request, we can provide a suitable condenser as well.

Auxiliaries – the ideal equipment
to round out the package
We pay attention to the details. We not only
offer you the core components for flexible
and efficient packages, we also provide
the auxiliaries necessary for economical
and reliable operation. To minimize field
work during assembly and maintenance,
the auxiliary systems and associated piping
are designed and manufactured to allow
easy access and require fewer connections.
Air intake system
Ambient air is guided and filtered to the compressor inlet
with an option for a self-cleaning (pulse) filter with automatic dust removal. Inlet air-conditioning options are available that include evaporative cooling and inlet chilling for
increased output on hot days. Inlet heating options are
available for extreme cold environments.
Exhaust gas system
Exhaust gas is guided from the gas turbine via the diffuser
to the turbine plant’s stack or to a combined cycle plant’s
heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG). A bypass stack
option is available for combined cycle plants for switching
between combined cycle mode and simple cycle mode
during operation.
Electrical system
The electrical package contains equipment necessary
for sequencing, control, and monitoring of the gas turbine
and generator. This includes the gas turbine control system,
motor control centers, generator protective relay panels,
fire protection system, battery bank, battery charger,
and dry-type transformers.
12
Oil systems
The oil systems consist of a lube oil (LO) package and a
hydraulic oil power unit (HPU). The LO package provides
clean, filtered oil for lubricating and lifting the gas turbine
and generator bearings, and provides lubrication for the
turning gear. The LO skid consists of the lube oil reservoir,
LO pump, and lift-oil pumps and provides a support structure for the LO cooling system (fin-fan air or water cooled).
An all-weatherproof lube oil enclosure option is available
for cold or dusty environments. The HPU provides mediumpressure hydraulic oil to o
 perate the gas fuel-stage throttle
valve, the inlet guide vane actuator, and the variable guide
vane actuators.
Starting system
The starting system consists of an air cooled static frequency converter (SFC) and a turning gear system. The
turning gear can be remotely and automatically operated.
The turning gear system rotates the rotor at 120 rpm
during shutdown to facilitate a uniform cooldown. During
startup, the turning gear rotates the rotor to remove bow
and facilitate a smooth start. The turning gear also provides the breakaway torque to accelerate the gas turbine
to the speed needed to engage the SFC. The SFC accelerates
the gas turbine to ignition speed, and after successful ignition the SFC will assist in accelerating the unit to rated speed.
Compressor-water wash skid
The compressor-water wash skid is provided for on-line
and off-line c ompressor cleaning. It features an AC motordriven pump, piping, valves, strainer junction box, cabling,
flowmeter, and detergent storage tank. Everything is
assembled on a portable skid for greater flexibility.
Enclosures
The GT is housed in an enclosure with easy disassemble/
assemble walls for quick engine access.
Fire protection
The fire protection system gives a visual indication of
actuation at the local control panel. The fire suppressant
system provides total protection of the turbine enclosure
and the electrical control package.
There are many other options available to meet your projectspecific needs.

Elk River Plant
Since July 2009, Great River Energy (GRE) in Minnesota
(U.S.) has placed its trust in our package technology.
GRE successfully operates a SGT6-PAC 5000F package
tasked with managing peak loads at its Elk River simple
cycle gas turbine power plant.
Great River Energy specifically opted for our SGT6-PAC
5000F package because a significant proportion of their
power supply is provided by wind power. The gas turbine
is deployed as a powerful and flexible peaker to handle
power peaks regardless of weather conditions. This is an
ideal area of application: because of its fast startup time,
the SGT6-5000F can compensate for power shortfalls in
an extremely short time, and so it plays an invaluable
role in providing a reliable and stable power supply.
