SPPA-R3000 Turbine Controls
replaces the installed GE Mark II turbine
control and protection system of two crucial
GE Frame 5 black start units. The new redundant and failsafe Siemens solution improves
the power output, reliability and flexibility of
gas turbines.
The Result
■ Increased power output
■ Enhanced flexibility,
reliability and operational
safety
■ Operation based on ecofriendly biofuel feasible
without any controller
logic reoptimization
The Plant
Owned by PT Pembangkitan Jawa-Bali (PJB) and
located in Indonesia, the Gresik power station
operates 5 gas plants, 4 steam plants and
3 combined cycle plants with a total installed
capacity of 2,280 MW. In case of emergency,
two GE gas turbines power up the entire internal Gresik grid, crucial for this plant operating
since 1978.
The Task
Replace the old and outdated GE Mark II turbine
control and protection system for 2 GE MS5001
(Frame5) 22 MW gas turbines, upgrading the
black start units to main generating units. This
includes vibration monitoring, AVR & Autosynchronizer and partial replacement of field
instrumentation with new cabling. From the
customer’s perspective, the key drivers behind
the modernization project were the decreasing
availability of spare parts, an increasing failure
rate and inadequate fault analysis capability,
along with the need to run the turbine on
biofuel instead of using diesel with the same
power output.
Our Solution
The installed control system (GE Mark II) was
replaced by a state-of-the-art redundant and
failsafe SPPA-R3000 solution for Dual Fuel
Firing. The new Siemens control system incorporates the latest innovation in terms of turbine
technology and control algorithm. This proven
technology is standardized and scalable, with
electrical solutions, process engineering and
comprehensive automation functions.
The system features local touch-screen operation panels as well as remote operation plus full
integration of the generator protection and AVR
scheme, achieving total compliance with the
safety requirements of the regulatory authorities. A new digital auto-paralleling device
ensures fault-free synchronization with the grid.
New gas turbine exhaust temperature cables
and junction boxes provide excellent control
accuracy. To meet the stringent requirements
for control quality, accuracy and reliability, all
speed and vibration sensors were replaced by
new state-of-the-art Siemens controls.
