UD Saturday Symposium Museum Exhibition Tour and Discussion “Picturing Poe” September 15, 11:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Brandywine River Museum September 15: “Picturing Poe” UD’s Friends of Art History collaborates with the Brandywine River Museum on Poe event University of Delaware alumni and friends are invited to attend a special Saturday Symposium on September 15 that will focus on Edgar Allan Poe and how he came to be one of the most widely illustrated authors in the world. This Saturday Symposium will be held at the Brandywine River Museum where guests will view the exhibition, Picturing Poe: Illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe’s Stories and Poems, and attend talks featuring UD faculty. The symposium will begin at 11:00 am when Audrey Lewis, the curator of Picturing Poe and an alumna of UD’s Department of Art History, will give an introductory talk about the exhibition that features works by an international cast of artists, including Édouard Manet, Paul Gauguin, Aubrey Beardsley, and Robert Motherwell. Lewis welcomes the chance to share her work with scholars and symposium participants saying: “Poe’s macabre stories and poems of terror and mystery have thrilled readers and inspired artists since the author’s death in 1849, so I look forward to this rare opportunity of viewing many of the best illustrations with UD experts in art history and literature and so many members of the Brandywine and University communities. We expect to have a lively exchange of ideas and observations throughout the day.” Following a tour of the exhibition and lunch, three UD scholars will interpret aspects of Poe’s work that resonated among visual artists. Wendy Bellion, Associate Professor of Art History will discuss “The Gothic Imagination in American Art;” Edward Larkin, Associate Professor of English will consider “Poe’s Visual Imagination;” and Nina Kallmyer, Professor and Chair of the Department of Art History, will speak about “Manet and the Poetic Raven.” The symposium will conclude at 3:30 pm. The cost is $35 per person and includes the program, lunch, and all-­‐day admission to the Brandywine River Museum. Parking is free.
