RULES & REGULATIONS
ABSENCES
Personal, medical or excused absences must and will be verified. Each absence excused or not will
result in a one point grade decrease off final grade totals. For example, five absences will result in
a 5-point drop in grade and an automatic letter grade reduction. If you must be absent for illness or
sports, etc., you need to be working consistently and well to earn a better grade. Official University
excused absences should be presented as early as possible and in written form.
Prolonged and sequential absences, e.g. two, three weeks or more weeks straight, means a student has
missed too much of the term and would be advised to drop the course
MAKE UP WORK
All Make Ups will be taken during dead week only no matter what excuse, e.g. illness/death/field
trip/sporting event, etc. Students must know the test they missed and set up an appointment to take the
makeup during dead week.
No more than one Make Up per term is permitted; any other make up will count as a flat zero and
will be averaged into grades as such.
THERE IS NO EXTRA WORK. Students must know basic course material and complete
assignments. Assignments are due on the date announced. Assignments are considered late if turned in
past 5:00pm on the date due. Assignment may be turned in during class or to the History Department
office staff before 5:00pm.
LECTURE NOTES: Students are required to take notes in this class. You must turn in your set
for the course on the day of the final exam and the notes may be picked up at the end of exam week
or within one month after the beginning of the next term. Due to limited space, if left more than
forty-five days after the final exam, they will be destroyed.
ASSISTANCE: Students needing assistance should seek aid regarding study habits,
understanding the material, test taking or improvement of grades immediately. Leaving it until
after mid-term is not acceptable, professional behavior and "Hail Mary Saves" occur more often on the
football field than in the classroom. Wanting a better grade and earning it are very different. One
should never, to misquote Charlie Brown, confuse praying for a better grade with studying for a better
grade.
Grades will be returned as promptly as possible. Multiple choice exams will be usually returned
within 48 to 60 hours. Written work takes, depending on the size of the class, workloads, etc., longer. If
you have questions about a test, interpretation of grades, or need help, you should come in promptly.
Three or four weeks later is not acceptable. Moreover, you are expected to pick up tests promptly, if
you come in for help or to discuss grades, you MUST bring in your text, your notes and all
returned test materials.
Telephones must be turned off at the beginning of a class. If you have a vibrating phone turn it
off. It is rude and disruptive to be “stepping outside” to answer the phone and then wandering back into
class. Of course, if you have a legitimate health problem speak with me after this class. Otherwise two
points will be deducted from a grade each time you leave during a lecture.
REMEMBER
FOR ALL CONFERENCES, YOU MUST BRING A COPY OF THESE SHEETS AND A COPY
OF YOUR SYLLABUS AS WELL AS YOUR TEXT, ALL TEST MATERIALS AND YOUR
NOTES. This in necessary and required since it enables the instructor to diagnose problems and
provide help.
Papers are not accepted late. A grade of F will be entered for a paper not turned in on due date.
Tests should be taken on time; in dead week, only one make up is permitted.
Any other missed tests will be graded as a zero and averaged into the final grade.
Students should be aware of the importance of grammar. Spelling and style in the use of logic and
persuasion in the discipline of History as a factor in final grades. College is a learning experience.
But steady improvement over four years is expected in order to produce educated men and
women.
