Newsletter for June 24th, 2015
From the Principal’s Desk
On behalf of the staff at Kortright Hills Public School,
I would like to wish you all a very safe and fun filled
summer. As we head into the new school year we will
be launching our Board's new mission statement into
our school community: Lead, Learn, Inspire,
Together. As a staff, we will be working with our
students and parents to explore what this mission
statement means to us at Kortright and help us all see
ourselves in this language through our daily work,
celebrations, etc.. I would like to invite you to be a
part of this process by joining parent council as well as
working with your children in developing these big
ideas to support them to be their personal best as
contributing citizens in the Kortright Community. We
look forward to seeing you all in the 2015-16 school
year.
Changes in Staff for 2015-16
It is with mixed emotions that the
staff and students say goodbye to Ms.
Holland this week as she retires. Ms.
Holland has been a valued member of
the KHPS community for the past eight
years. Many of our current junior and
intermediate students have been very lucky to have
spent a year in Grade 4 or 5 with Ms. Holland out in
her portable; where learning and fun go hand in hand,
where teamwork and collaboration are key, and where
everyone knows that it's okay to ask questions and
make mistakes as long as you keep on trying! After all,
everyone has a "nincompoop" moment every now and
then... Ms. Holland's students even have a song that
they sing at just those times. Ms. Holland has also
been involved with many other activities throughout
her years at KHPS; including the skipping club,
volleyball team, yearbook, and many wonderful trips to
Medieval Madness. We will miss her gentle smile, her
genuine laugh, her caring nature, and her willingness to
jump in and help with anything at anytime! Ms.
Holland, we wish you a relaxing retirement and we
know that you will enjoy having more time to spend in
your gardens and with your family. Thank you for your
contributions to KHPS and for making a difference in
the lives of so many of our students, staff and
families! You will always be a Kortright Cobra and we
hope that you will visit us in the future.
We want to wish Madame Franco all
the best in her retirement. We will
miss her kind spirit, cheerful smile
and witty sense of humour. Madame
Frano has been a valuable member of
the Kortright Hills school community
for the past 13 years. She has helped to make KHPS a
better place and worked hard to make a difference
for her students. During her time at Kortright Hills,
students have been extremely fortunate to learn a
second language from this remarkable teacher.
Students quickly learn that Madame Franco has high
expectations for academic excellence. Because Mme
Franco did not have one specific room for French, she
could be seen around the school with her "Ferrrari" or
French cart. Her passe
le papier and passe le papier extreme are legendary
among her students. Over the past several years,
Madame Franco has organized the Grade Eight
Graduation ceremonies and helped create memories
that students will not forget. Madame Franco, we wish
you well as you begin the next chapter in your life and
hope you enjoy your retirement and extra time you can
spend with your family. As well, you will now have more
time to design sweaters for chickens and we're sure
your garden will be the envy of everyone in your
neighbourhood. You will be remembered fondly at
KHPS and we hope that you will visit us often.
As you may or may not know, in addition
to our retiring staff leaving for the fall
we will also be saying 'good-bye for now'
to Ms. Holliday. Ms. Holliday has been an
integral part of our school staff and we
are sadly saying good-bye to her as she
heads to John Gault to take on a Special Education
role. Due to declining enrollment at Kortright, we are
reducing in staff and this change is resulting in Ms.
Holliday relocating to another school. We have so
appreciated all that she has brought to Kortright and
we wish her well in her new position with the Board.
Another integral member of our staff
that we are sad so see leave us is Ms.
Katsuno. She is taking her talents to join
the staff at Salem P.S. We have been so
lucky to have her at Kortright Hills this
past year! She is and will always be a COBRA at heart.
A Kind, Inclusive, Respectful, Responsible Problem
Solver.
All the best Ms. Katsuno!
Allyssa Follick
We would like to thank Ms. Follick for her dedication
and work with our students. Ms. Follick was with us at
Kortright from January until June and will be missed
as she worked hard to support our students. She was
an excellent addition to our school staff. All the best
in your future endeavours Ms. Follick!
Melissa Purchase
Ms. Purchase has been an excellent addition to our
staff this year. She worked as an ECE in Mrs. Fulton's
kindergarten and openly shared her gifts with the
Kortright community. Ms. Purchase is heading to
J.D.Hogarth, a school much closer to her home. Ms.
Purchase we have very much enjoyed having you as a
member of our staff team and we all wish you the best
as you head into your new school.
Summer Reading
Summer is quickly approaching and while our school
library might not be open
during summer break,
students can access our
digital collection 24/7!
Help your child keep their reading skills strong this
summer with eBooks and audiobooks from Overdrive
accessible through UG2GO.
Students can login to Overdrive using their Windows
network login. Digital books can be enjoyed on a
computer, tablet, smartphone or eReader device. Read
right in the internet browser or download using the
free OverDrive app. At the end of the lending period,
titles automatically expire so there are never any late
fees. Our digital collection can be accessed anywhere
in the world, as long as there is an internet connection.
Visit our digital collection at
https://www.ugdsb.on.ca/ug2go and make sure you
start summer vacation off right! Look for the
Overdrive button under the Read section of UG2GO.
UG2GO also has lots of other great links to keep
students learning while having fun all summer long!
The Guelph Public Library Book Mobile will be visiting
Kortright Hills PS every second Thursday from 3 - 5

Thank You
Athena from grade 4A would like to say a big Thank
You for the wonderful donations that were brought in
during the Humane Society drive back in May. There
were a couple of boxes and some bags that were filled!
The Humane Society was very appreciative when
Athena, her mom, and some friends dropped
everything off.
The animals appreciate all the help we humans can
give.
