June 2015 Principal’s Message: Glenbrook School Organization 2015—2016: On behalf of the staff and students at Glenbrook, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Glenbrook School Council for all of the time and energy that they have put into providing events, food days and fundraising in order to make our school such a great place for students to learn and grow. Glenbrook has been assigned a “tentative” school organization for the 2015— 2016 school year. We expect that our school will have a population of approximately 485 students in September 2015. At this time our school has been assigned 20 classrooms. Our “tentative” school organization is printed below. Our School Council is comprised of a very small, but dedicated core group of parents who are genuinely interested in providing the students at Glenbrook with opportunities that enhance their education. We sincerely appreciate everything that they do for us throughout the school year. As we approach the summer holidays, I would like to wish all Glenbrook students and parents a safe and relaxing summer. We hope that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy “family time” and can rest up for the academic challenges of the 2015— 2016 school year. June 5th P. D. Day: There will be no school for students on Friday, June 5th, 2015. The staff at Glenbrook will engage in a variety of professional development and assessment and evaluation activities on this day. This is the second last Professional Development Day for the 2014—2015 school year. The final PD Day will be Friday, June 26th, 2015. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 25th, 2015. Monday, June 29th and Tuesday, June 30 are Board holidays for all Upper Grand D. S. B. students. Please remember that this school organization is “tentative” and is based on our current staff remaining at Glenbrook and based on 485 students attending the school in September 2015. If there is a significant increase or decrease in our population, we may have to reorganize. This reorganization would take place during the first or second week of September 2015. Parents will be notified if there is a school reorganization. Staffing changes may result in a school reorganization as well. 2015—2016 “Tentative” School Organization Junior Kindergarten / Senior Kindergarten A Junior Kindergarten / Senior Kindergarten B Junior Kindergarten / Senior Kindergarten C Junior Kindergarten / Senior Kindergarten D Grade 1 Grade 1 Grade 1/2 Grade 2 Grade 2 Grade 2/3 Grade 3 Grade 3/4 Grade 4 Grade 4/5 Grade 5 Grade 5/6 Grade 6 Grade 7/8 Grade 7/8 Grade 7/8 New School Year Begins On September 8th, 2015: Next September, Labour Day falls on Monday, September 7th, 2015. Teachers will be returning for a Professional Development Day on Thursday, September 3rd, prior to students returning. We hope that parents and students will enjoy the extra long holiday this summer! P.D. Day —Friday, June 5, 2015 (No School for Students) Playing and Having Fun In The Summer Sun: The summer holidays are almost here and children will have more time to play inside and outside your home. Play helps children of all ages build social skills, be more creative, and solve problems. Children who play often are happier and healthier. Children need free time every day to play. It is important for children to choose how they would like to play and what they would like to play with. Younger children may choose to build with blocks, play chasing or tag games, paint, draw, make a puzzle or play with dolls, cars or trucks. Older children might like building a fort, riding a bike, playing ball, building with a construction set, or playing a board game. Encourage your child to engage in active (physical) play more often rather than playing video games and watching T.V. Children enjoy playing with water or sand, playing games like hide and seek, or with bean bags, balls, skipping ropes or bikes. Many children enjoy putting things together and taking things apart. Children also like to play games in which they can pretend such as dress-up, puppets and role playing. What did you like to do when you were a child? Play is good for adults too. Adults who take time to “play” and relax are less stressed and happier. Have some fun this summer! Kyla Prosser from the organization “Kill It With Kindness” and Lanny Fleming from the Elementary Teacher’s Federation of Ontario brought this beautiful, brightly coloured bench which was presented at a full school assembly. This assembly also gave us an opportunity to recognize our students who won awards for their posters and speeches with the Legion and who also participated in the Gauss Math contest. Our Punjabi Club presented their dance to the delight of the rest of the school. Also, our Me to We team played a video that they had created, with Glenbrook students talking about what friendship means to them. The Friendship Bench is meant to bring positivity and happiness to schools. It is a safe place for children and youth to go and it can help open up lines of communication. It represents a place for students to go when they need someone to talk to. They may need a friend to play with or they may want to sit there to offer their help to others who may need a friend to talk to. Students can also use it if they are having a great day and want to sit on the Friendship Bench with their friends. We would like to thank Tara McCabe, our Child and Youth Counsellor, who worked with the Me to We team to ensure that Glenbrook would be awarded this Friendship Bench. Our Friendship Bench is currently on display in our front foyer but it will be placed in various locations between now and the end of the school year for students to enjoy. “Be The Best You Can Be” Day Was A Huge Success: Our “Be The Best You Can Be” day which was held on Thursday, May 14th, 2015, was a resounding success! Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from the four North Dufferin schools (Glenbrook, Hyland Heights, Centennial Hylands and Primrose) were treated to a full day of inspirational speakers at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex. The list of speakers included local politicians, service club representatives, sports personalities, and individuals who are involved in initiatives that help others locally and around the world. There was also a local band, a talented singer and many dancers who entertained the students. A group of students had the opportunity to work with an artist and they were featured on the front page of the Shelburne Free Press. We would like to thank Tara McCabe, our Child and Youth Counsellor, and her team who have worked for months to make this day a reality. Recording School Events and Privacy: Many of us like to record special events like graduations, school plays and other events that take place at school. There is a risk that recording such events will invade the privacy rights of students, parents and school staff. Personally recording school events and then subsequent public posting of these recordings on social media networks such as Facebook or Youtube is not respectful of the privacy rights of all those parents, staff and particularly students whose images are shared without their knowledge or permission. When school staff plan to record school events, parents will be notified in advance of this recording taking place. We appreciate the cooperation of all involved to ensure that our students’ safety is not compromised. Red Cross Baby Sitting Course: A Red Cross Babysitting Course is being offered at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Friday, June 5th from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. This course teaches important skills for staying home alone or looking after other children. This course also teaches children basic First Aid skills. For Registration or more information please call the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex at 519-925-2402 or email at cdrcpool@shelburne.ca.
