Tricano semester one - 10/22 Student life 54 Former world champion surfer, Shaun Tomson, visited the school to speak about his journey in life. After the loss of his first son, Shaun dedicated his life to sharing his message with young people, who sometimes are faced with dangerous decisions. Shaun saw teenagers were making bad choices and realized that it was a major problem in today’s society. Shaun’s book, The Code inspired Mrs. Aileen Carlson to develop a project for her Graphic I, II and III students. Each student created a graphic poster which showcased their own I Will statements. i will UPLIFT and ENCOURAGE I chose to write I will encourage and uplift, because they always say kids can be mean and I want to be that girl that in 50 years, my peers can remember that I made them feel safe and sweet. High school is a hard time, so if I can mediate that at all then I WILL. I WILL GROW I was inspired by the change of a flower, as it grows and fully blooms in life. I am trying to be the best version of myself. I hope to never stop growing. I WILL IMPACT THE UNIVERSE It means that I am determined to be known. I want to be successful and change the world. I will celebrate life You can’t waste time worrying because life is too short. Enjoy each moment and be yourself. i will never stop moving forward I did this because no matter what confusion and adversity life through at me I will keep moving and never look back with regret. In my I will, I created a graphic of an interstate I did this because interstates are long and sometimes confusing, which relates directly to life. i will tell my own story If you don’t tell your own story, then whose story will you tell. I will love fully I was constantly reminded of the idea of loving unconditionally. At church and around Holy Trinity, my eyes were opened to seeing people that loved with their entire heart. I thought it was a really cool idea and decided it should be a goal to strive for. “I thought what Mrs. Aileen Carlson did with the students’ I Will statements and the graphics was very inspirational,” said Shaun. The artwork was combined, printed on canvas and hung in the chapel as a permanent installation. page by Caroline Dixon shaun tomson 55
