BHSU Receives Grant
for
Spearfish Local Program
Black Hills State University was recently awarded a $49,000
Specialty Crop Block Grant from the South Dakota Department of
Agriculture.
The purpose of the Specialty Crop Block Grant is to increase the
competitiveness of specialty crops. Specialty crops are defined as
fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery
crops (including floriculture). The USDA considers most local food
a specialty crop.
Katie Greer, sustainability coordinator at BHSU, said the grant
will further support BHSU’s Spearfish Local program, launched
in summer 2014. Spearfish Local brings local producers,
distributors, purchasers and consumers of local food together
with the goal of growing support for the local economy.
Black Hills State University
has a strong history in teacher
education. We embrace our
history in preparing teachers and
our continued impact on schools.
BHSU is the largest teacher
education program in the state of
South Dakota.
We are all inspired by teachers.
Over the next few months, we’ll
feature several of our successful
BHSU alumni on our website and
advertisements sharing stories
of how they were inspired by
teachers.
Classes started this week for spring
semester at BHSU. I wish you, our
students, faculty, staff, alumni and
friends a healthy and successful
2015!
Faculty Member Monitors Bioreactor
The new Spearfish Local badge, designed by
BHSU student Danielle Doney, will serve as
a visual guide on local businesses to inform
the public where they can find local produce.

Sanford Lab
Dr. Cynthia Anderson, assistant professor of biology at BHSU, is helping monitor organisms collected
through a bioreactor recently installed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.
Using the bioreactor, a container used to carry out a chemical process in a concentrated area, researchers
will grow and study individual organisms to understand the metabolic pathways allowing microbes to
survive in low-oxygen environments.

Last month, President Jackson visited the
Yellow Jacket Learning Center, BHSU’s campus
daycare. Upon arrival he sat down at a kids’
table with a group of three-year-olds and then
joined “circle time,” answering questions from
the older children. The kids also took the
President on a tour around the Center.

Alumni Share Teacher-Inspired Stories
in
New Ad Campaign
Can you recall a teacher or mentor who was especially influential in your journey? President
Jackson says each of his favorite teachers gave him their time and attention. “They took time to
show they cared and that I mattered,” said the President. “They are a part of me and the things I
do everyday.”
Here’s a sneak peek of one of our new billboards (below). BHSU alumni (left to right) Julieanne
Morse, Alex Hanson, Jesse Dana, Anya Mueller and others talk about how teachers inspired
their successful career paths in BHSU’s new advertising campaign, “All Inspired by Teachers.”
Billboards, print advertisements, and website feature stories will share the importance of teachers
in preparing graduates to succeed. Check the BHSU website for stories and more photos in the
coming weeks!
