News from President Tom Jackson, Jr. November 20, 2015 Proud to Honor All Who Have Served BHSU is a Military Friendly School for the sixth consecutive year Black Hills State University was named to Victory Media’s 2016 Military Friendly Schools, an honor awarded to the top 15 percent of higher educational institutions that do the most to embrace military students and to dedicate resources to ensure academic success. BHSU was recognized for its support of student veterans, graduation and employment outcomes and military spouse policies. The University also was named to the Military Times Best for Vets: Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., greets veterans Business Schools in 2013 and 2014. In 2015 BHSU was named a Top during the recent Vets social. School in the Military Advanced Education (MAE) Guide to Colleges and Universities. A year ago, as I was officially installed as BHSU’s 10th president, I spoke of the power of this university, the beauty of the Black Hills and the spirit of its people. Student veteran donates American flag flown over U.S. Capitol to BHSU-RC An American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol honoring veterans in the state of South Dakota found a new home thanks to the Student Veteran’s Club at BHSU-RC. Joshua Kosola, business administration-human resources management major from Newell and co-founder of the Vet’s Club at BHSU-RC, said the Vet’s Club worked with Sen. John Thune several years ago to fly the flag over the U.S. Capitol honoring South Dakota veterans. The flag can serve as a memorial at BHSU-RC thanking current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. BHSU provides space for a student veteran center on campus and at BHSU-Rapid City. BHSU International and Honors Programs Continue Today, and every day, I am reminded of why I chose to come to this place and am still humbled by the opportunity to work with the talented and hard-working men and women at this university and in this community. Study abroad opportunities increase New relationships and collaborations over the past year are providing increased study abroad options for BHSU students. BHSU has students from 29 countries and is connected with more than 30 countries where students can travel, learn, and complete their degree. Studies consistently show that students who study abroad achieve higher retention and graduation rates, secure employment sooner after graduation, and earn higher salaries. Let’s take a moment to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and look forward to another year of progress! Bellman Honors Center continues success The BHSU Honors Program now offers two new academic tracks: The International University Scholar and the University Research Scholar. The Center was recently renamed the Bellman Honors Center in recognition of long-time professors Dr. Wanda Bellman and her late husband, Dr. Stewart Bellman. More than 75 students are enrolled in the BHSU Honors Program, double the number Wanda Bellman from the previous year. to Grow International students and University representatives recently returned from Botswana. Underground Campus Is Now Open [Where ANYTHING is possible] The BHSU Underground Campus at Sanford Lab in Lead is now open and in use by students and faculty. BHSU, in partnership with Sanford Lab, constructed a cleanroom and adjoining work space at the 4850’ level of the lab for multidisciplinary research. The Sanford Science Education Center, on the BHSU campus, has a direct video link to the Sanford Lab. Plans are underway for the first annual BHSU Underground Robotics Competition in March. BHSU students are working with middle school students in Belle Fourche and Spearfish. Find out more about the BHSU Underground Campus. Spearfish Local Expands Program with New Grant The BHSU Spearfish Local Program, launched in 2014, received a $100,000 grant from the USDA Local Food Promotion Program to incubate a local food hub for the Northern Hills. Through the program, cafeterias will have one point of contact to get food from multiple area farmers.
