News from President Tom Jackson, Jr. August 19, 2015 BHSU Raises Money, Collects Donations for Spearfish Food Pantry during Downtown Friday Night Event Faculty, staff, students, alums and supporters highlighted their BHSU pride at Downtown Friday Night in Spearfish earlier this month. BHSU raised more than $1,100 and collected 100 food items for the Spearfish Food Pantry during BHSU Night at the weekly summer music and community event. We’re ending the summer on a high note at BHSU. From tremendous community support during BHSU Night at Spearfish Downtown Friday Nights, to the 1883 Gala where we honored our donors, to the support of programs helping our students graduate and achieve their dreams - BHSU is ready for the new school year. I hope to see you at the Community Campus Fair & BBQ, Sunday, Aug. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Young Center Field House as we welcome students to campus. “We are very fortunate to have such a great relationship with BHSU and the active role the University took with us this summer,” said Scott Temple, an organizer of Downtown Friday Nights. The University asked the community to highlight their BHSU pride with specially designed T-shirts, which were provided to those who brought a cash or food donation for the Spearfish Food Pantry during Downtown Friday Nights. BHSU Receives Nearly $1.5 Million Services Program for Student Support A highly successful program at Black Hills State University, which more than doubles the graduation rate of qualifying students, just earned a grant for nearly $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The highly competitive five-year grant for the Federal TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program allows for continuation of the University’s outreach and student President Jackson congratulates students and alums who have services to first-generation college students, benefited from the TRIO Student Support Services program at low-income individuals, and those with BHSU. disabilities. The funds provide support for services including academic advising and tutoring to help students successfully graduate from college. BHSU has offered TRIO SSS since the first grant was awarded in 1971, positively impacting the academic and professional careers of several thousand students. A first generation student himself, BHSU President Jackson says he’s proud of the University’s legacy of success with the program. “This grant provides tremendous opportunities for students to achieve their dream of earning a university degree. With this program, Black Hills State University creates an atmosphere of success and inspires students to set goals and seek new possibilities for their futures. I admire each and every one of the students who have taken part in this program,” Jackson says. “I commend the BHSU staff for their ongoing dedication to our students’ success.” August 19, 2015 Alum Earns Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Lindsey Brewer, math teacher at Huron High School, received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), recently. The PAEMST is awarded annually to outstanding kindergarten through 12th grade science and math teachers across the country. Two educators from each state are chosen to receive the honor. Brewer received $10,000 from the National Science Foundation to use at her discretion and was invited to an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Brewer is one of three BHSU alums that have received the PAEMST award in the past two years. In 2014, Erin Marsh, math teacher at the Pierre Indian Learning Center, and Ann Anderson, Belle Fourche fifth-grade science teacher, earned the honor. Top Tweets Such a fantastic place to live. Spearfish named one of best small towns in U.S. Brewer ---@tomjackjr Students Receive Biomedical Research Fellowships Follow President Jackson on Twitter @tomjackjr Eight BHSU students and their faculty mentors are participating in a statewide effort to develop biomedical research. “The research fellowship program is highly selective and provides students the opportunity to spend 10 weeks working and learning in the hands-on environment of our BHSU research labs,” said Dr. Cynthia Anderson, assistant professor of biology. Anderson worked with colleagues at the University of South Dakota and the South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (SD BRIN) to write a grant proposal funded by the Institutional Development Award (IDA) program from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). BHSU also receives funding from the grant to support the DNA sequencing and genotyping core facility (WestCore) housed at BHSU. WestCore provides genetic services to the participating SD BRIN faculty and students. Jacket Ride Raises Scholarship Funds More than 70 motorcyclists took part in the third annual BHSU Jacket Ride on Aug. 4, raising more than $4,000 for student veteran scholarships. This year’s Jacket Ride Scholarship recipient was BHSU-RC student Tyler Rousselle, human services-justice studies major from Custer. Gold Medalist Speaks at BHSU Running Camp Pictured below, Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills addressed a room of student athletes at the 15th annual Black Hills State University Distance Running Camp last month. Mills, who won the gold medal for the 10,000-meter run during the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, not only spoke about his athletic career, but encouraged students to make positive choices and earn good grades throughout their academic careers.
