BHSU Raises Money, Collects Donations for Spearfish Food
Pantry during Downtown Friday Night Event
Faculty, staff, students, alums
and supporters highlighted their
BHSU pride at Downtown Friday
Night in Spearfish earlier this
month.
BHSU raised more than $1,100
and collected 100 food items for
the Spearfish Food Pantry during
BHSU Night at the weekly
summer music and community
event.
We’re ending the summer on
a high note at BHSU.
From tremendous community
support during BHSU Night
at Spearfish Downtown
Friday Nights, to the 1883
Gala where we honored
our donors, to the support
of programs helping our
students graduate and
achieve their dreams - BHSU
is ready for the new school
year.
I hope to see you at the
Community Campus Fair &
BBQ, Sunday, Aug. 23 at 5:30
p.m. in the Young Center
Field House as we welcome
students to campus.
“We are very fortunate to
have such a great relationship
with BHSU and the active role
the University took with us this
summer,” said Scott Temple, an
organizer of Downtown Friday
Nights.
The University asked the community to highlight their BHSU pride with
specially designed T-shirts, which were provided to those who brought a cash or
food donation for the Spearfish Food Pantry during Downtown Friday Nights.

disabilities. The funds provide support for
services including academic advising and tutoring to help students successfully graduate from college.
BHSU has offered TRIO SSS since the first grant was awarded in 1971, positively impacting the academic and
professional careers of several thousand students.
A first generation student himself, BHSU President Jackson says he’s proud of the University’s legacy of
success with the program.
“This grant provides tremendous opportunities for students to achieve their dream of earning a university
degree. With this program, Black Hills State University creates an atmosphere of success and inspires
students to set goals and seek new possibilities for their futures. I admire each and every one of the students
who have taken part in this program,” Jackson says. “I commend the BHSU staff for their ongoing dedication
to our students’ success.”

Alum Earns Presidential Award
for
Excellence
in
Teaching
Lindsey Brewer, math teacher at Huron High School, received
the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and
Science Teaching (PAEMST), recently.
The PAEMST is awarded annually to outstanding kindergarten
through 12th grade science and math teachers across the
country. Two educators from each state are chosen to receive the
honor.
Brewer received $10,000 from the National Science Foundation
to use at her discretion and was invited to an awards ceremony
in Washington, D.C.
Brewer is one of three BHSU alums that have received the
PAEMST award in the past two years. In 2014, Erin Marsh, math
teacher at the Pierre Indian Learning Center, and Ann Anderson,
Belle Fourche fifth-grade science teacher, earned the honor.

Eight BHSU students and their
faculty mentors are participating in a
statewide effort to develop biomedical
research.
“The research fellowship program is
highly selective and provides students
the opportunity to spend 10 weeks working and learning in the hands-on
environment of our BHSU research labs,” said Dr. Cynthia Anderson, assistant
professor of biology.
Anderson worked with colleagues at the University of South Dakota and the
South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (SD BRIN) to write a
grant proposal funded by the Institutional Development Award (IDA) program
from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
BHSU also receives funding from the grant to support the DNA sequencing and
genotyping core facility (WestCore) housed at BHSU. WestCore provides genetic
services to the participating SD BRIN faculty and students.

Gold Medalist Speaks
at
BHSU Running Camp
Pictured below, Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills addressed a room of
student athletes at the 15th annual Black Hills State University Distance
Running Camp last month. Mills, who won the gold medal for the
10,000-meter run during the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, not only spoke about
his athletic career, but encouraged students to make positive choices and
earn good grades throughout their academic careers.
