News from President Tom Jackson, Jr. March 12, 2015 Sanford Lab Inspires Unique Learning Experiences During Research Day at the Capitol earlier this month, South Dakota legislators learned about the many opportunities BHSU students have at Sanford Underground Research Facility from two BHSU students. Dr. Brianna Mount, assistant professor of physics research at BHSU, said the school’s proximity as the closest university to Sanford Lab offers many possibilities for students. Students, faculty and staff from many disciplines at BHSU participate in research and education activities with Sanford Underground Research Facility in the Homestake Gold Mine. The learning experience BHSU offers with the amenities of Sanford Lab is such a unique experience for students. “The BHSU Underground Campus at Sanford Lab will facilitate even more student projects,” said Mount. Foundation hosts Open House At President’s Residence In conjunction with BHSU’s 132nd founding anniversary, the community celebrated the opening of the new President’s Home. The home, owned by the BHSU Foundation, will host many events in years to come including student-faculty receptions. Nearly 250 guests toured the President’s Home, located on Saint Joe Street, adjacent to the Joy Alumni Welcome Center and campus. Retired President Kay Schallenkamp joins President Jackson and his spouse, Mona Jackson, to cut the cake celebrating BHSU’s Founder’s Day. More than 100 Employers Recruit at BHSU Job Fair Professor Composes “LUX” Inspired by Dark Matter Research Assistant professor of music Dr. Symeon Waseen premiered his musical masterpiece, “LUX” during BHSU’s New Music Extravaganza earlier this month. Waseen translated the idea of dark matter as part of the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment at Sanford Lab into music through electronic sounds via eight speakers surrounding the audience followed by live piano and percussion. Last month BHSU welcomed 50 school districts and 55 employers to the 2015 Black Hills Teacher Fair and Spring Jacket Job Fair. The Fair provided an opportunity for education majors to interview with school districts and for job seekers to network with prospective employers. March 12, 2015 Alumni Recognized at Annual Chamber Banquet BHSU had a strong presence at the 2015 Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, reinforcing the strong connection between the University and Spearfish.
