Ten Times the Generosity The Ten 4 Ten fundraiser aims to raise money for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. Mr. Mark Yanchus originally launched the campaign in 2006 at Ross in memory of his brother Scott, who passed of cancer 10 years earlier. He is the driving force behind this campaign with the help of many staff and students. All high schools in the city of Guelph are participating in this campaign, working together to make a difference in the community. John F. Ross has a goal to raise $50,000 alone. Weekly ‘Save the Future’ funds, selling tshirts, bake sales, competitive dodgeball games, buy-in events and more will all contribute to our goal. We are quickly working towards reaching our goal. John. F Ross will participate in hair cutting and hair donations to raise awareness and help to raise money for this cause. An informative assembly given by leaders of the Ten 4 Ten campaign was an inspirational and eye-opening opportunity for the students at Ross, to look for ways to make a difference in more than just their own lives. Our Ross Royals always show high levels of participation for fundraisers, like the Spread The Net campaign we completed in 2015. The final day for this campaign is April 9th, so come out to support Ten 4 Ten! Check out page 2 for more about Alicia Denoon as well as important Ten 4 Ten dates. Volume 1, Issue 3 March 2016 Striving to Make a Difference John F.Ross participates in many fundraisers, such as Spread the Net, but this year Alicia Denoon is one of the many students helping to organize the Ten 4 Ten Campaign. When Ten 4 Ten originally ran 10 years ago, Alicia was undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. Alicia is a cancer survivor and an active member of the Ross community. She has faced many challenges as a child, recovering from cancer, and “for [her] balance, coordination and vision were the big ones”. Ten 4 Ten is a larger Guelph community event, but as Royals we want to help support the common goal of raising $50,000 towards the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. The cancer community helped Alicia feel like it’s okay “to be different and do things in different ways,” and understand her own values. She strives to bring the community together and help raise awareness and money for the Foundation. Something as simple as a compliment or buying someone a coffee can be a simple act that can make someone’s day. Here at John F. Ross March 7th to 12th is a week to encourage students and provide ideas of some random acts so that the school can become a more positive environment and a place where students can be kind and receive kindness even to students they don’t know. This event helps promote anti-bullying and encourages students to make a difference in someone else’s life. When asked about the importance of simple acts of kindness, Amy Greatorex says, “Random acts of kindness can come from anywhere and anyone and I think it is important that we continue it beyond just one week.” Serving it Up! Royal Athletes are making a "racquet"! Joining a sport might be intimidating at first, but as Ms.Campolongo, one of the badminton coaches says, “It’s easier to tryout if you have a racquet in your hand.” Many students at Ross have been on the badminton team for a few years, but "The best thing about badminton would be the coaches, [who] give up so much time for us" according to Andy May. This year the number of students who tried out for the team increased greatly, so the badminton team will expand this year. Claire Sutherns has been on the team since grade ten and she says, “there are so many opportunities to become close with your teammates and the players change every year so there are always new people." Joining a sports team is a good way to get to know new people and get to know yourself. Katya Newby thinks that “badminton would be a great way to broaden my horizons coming from years of playing soccer". We look forward to seeing the team succeed this season, good luck Royals! On March 10th during first period, John F. Ross will be taking part in the celebration of Earth Hour. This worldwide movement was created by World Wild Fund for Nature in 2007 in hopes to reduce energy consumption around the world. But throughout the years Earth Hour has proven to do more than reduce energy, it has been used as a day to promote new climate change prevention projects and push the creation of laws that prohibit improper energy use. It is important that you encourage those around you to participate by turning the power off during the school scheduled Earth Hour on March 10th and the National Earth Hour on March 19th at 8:30pm so you can put the change in climate change. As an EcoSchools Gold Certified school, Ross is always looking for ways to support ways like Earth Hour to foster environmental conciousness in our school. Behind the Scenes John. F. Ross is known for the performances such as Music Night, F.R.O.S.T.Y, and more recently, FAME, the Musical. But what happens behind the scenes? Hard work and many long hours are put in by our technicians. According to Senior Technical Theatre student Ben Syms-Wilson, “during calm weeks it can be anywhere from five to ten hours, but on busy weeks it can get up to twenty or twenty five hours, sometimes even more.” But dedication and a love for what they do behind the scenes is worth much more than hours. Ally Roumeliotis feels that “even though it can be rough sometimes, I Newsletter Team: always have a place to go first period, and a place to go at lunch.” Editor: Chrystal Vermeulen Being able to experience the technology and the mechanics that go into Writers: Amy Greatorex, drama can greatly benefit students when they are finding a career path that is Sayo Hosoi, Taylor right for them.Drama tech is very rewarding at the end of every show and Lehman, Sara Lussier, continues to be rewarding when students move onto shows outside of John F. The book for March is The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. The novel is about a young man and woman who can both perform magic, and end up falling in love with each other. Against their wills, they are bound to a very dangerous game where they are pitted against each other, and in the end, only one can win and survive. According to Ms. Dell’Erede, book club was created “to give students and teachers a place to read great books and to have candid, low-pressure conversations about books”. The club helps to get people reading for their own enjoyment, but also to “identify our own authentic experiences” when reading and discussing. Feel free to come discuss this month’s book at our upcoming meeting. Happy reading Royals! 21 Meyer Drive | Guelph, ON | N0B 1S0 T: 519-822-7090 | Twitter @JohnFRoss | www.ugdsb.on.ca/jfr
