The Hinterlands Ensemble Workshop on Sept 19 Fall 2014 Productions: End Days by Deborah Zoe Laufer Directed by Daina Robins October 2-4, 9-11, 7:30 p.m. The Hinterlands create performances that are both highly irrational and deeply American. Formed in 2009 by Richard Newman and Liza Bielby, the Detroit-based company has used its unique physical, and collaborative process to create a range of work including psychedelic Wild West Urinetown shows, drive-in radio theatre, shadow puppet magical realism, immersive Music by Mark Hollmann, Lyrics documentary film, and sub-cultural Vaudeville. Through their rigorous by Hollmann and Greg Kotis Book by Greg Kotis physical/vocal/imaginative training process The Hinterlands have conducted Directed by Richard Perez artist-exchanges in the US, the Balkans, and China. Their work has been seen November 18-22, 7:30 p.m. at the Shanghai Biennale, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Teatri November 22, Matinee Dodona (Prishtina, Kosovo), Detroit Institute of Art, Cooking Fire Theatre Festival (Toronto), Alverno Presents (Milwaukee), and Legion Arts (Cedar Rapids) among others. The Hinterlands curate and manage Play House, a Detroit neighborhood-based performance space converted from a formerly vacant two-story house, as well as organize festivals and events that celebrate the diverse range of cultures and art forms in this strange hinterland called America. Upcoming Dates: Richard Newman – Co-director, The Hinterlands - was an ensemble member of Double Edge Theatre from 2004-2008 where he cocreated numerous performances including Republic of Dreams and the UnPOSSESSED. He was an artist in residence with The Dell’Arte The Hinterlands EnsemCompany (Blue Lake, CA) and founded the Breaking Bread Project - a ble workshop, 3:30-6pm, multi-year collaboration between artists in the U.S. and the Balkans. Richard also composes electronic music and DJ’s techno at venues throughout Detroit. 19 September 20 Liza Bielby – Co-director, The Hinterlands – worked for four years as the only non-Chinese national studying and performing Sichuanese folk “opera” (chuanju) throughout China. She has adapted physicality , End Days, 7:30 she learned in the discipline to explore American archetypes and urban dance, and brought The Hinterlands to Chengdu and Shanghai in 2011 p.m, DeWitt Main Theatre to collaborate with Chinese artists on a work-in-progress combining classic American vaudeville with traditional chuanju routines. Liza has a MFA in ensemble-based physical theatre from Dell’Arte International and is currently a member of the Bangla School of Music. Richard Newman and Liza Bielby will be holding their first workshop with Hope College students on September 19 from 3:30-6pm in the Studio Theatre. All students are invited to participate, including students who have an interest in design and technical theatre as well as actors. October 2-4, 9-11 ALL OUR TRAGIC Opportunity On September 20, the Western Theatre History I class will be taking a field trip to Chicago to view The Hypocrites performance of All Our Tragic, a 12-hour marathon of the thirty-two surviving Greek tragedies.
