Ms. Crump is a leader in the human resources and recruitment area with more than twenty years of experience. At Walmart, she is responsible for the execution of initiatives in employment practices, HR communication, performance management, staffing, talent development and associate relations for 5,000 management and hourly associates. Incoming freshmen Chancellor’s Scholars joined Dr. Soncerey Montgomery, Director of the Honors Program, Dean Jessica Bailey, and Ben Greene for an introduction to the School of Business and Economics and its new Her expertise extends to employee engagement and benefits, state and federal compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as Labor Relations, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Act. She is a longtime member of the Society for Human Resource Management and the Dress for Success organizations. Finance Lab. While there, students had an opportunity to see the technical capabilities of the room, learn about the RAMS Asset Management group (formerly the Student Investment Fund), inquire about majors at the SBE and ask questions about their future here as students at WSSU. This week, the RJ Reynolds Center has been a whirlwind of activity as freshmen descended upon campus for RAMDITION, WSSU’s special freshman orientation week. Students began checking into the residence halls Saturday, August 10, and they hit the ground running. They began taking care of all last-minute Dr. Jessica Bailey administrative responsibilities Sunday morning at “One Stop” in Anderson Center and were greeted by the academic deans at an assembly in K. R. Williams Auditorium in the afternoon. Sunday evening’s dinner was the event at which I met the freshmen who had been assigned to me as mentees. Monday and Tuesday, faculty serving as freshman advisors helped the new students build their schedules for fall semester. Faculty were welcomed back to campus Wednesday at the first SBE faculty meeting of the year. Like freshman advisors, the remainder of the faculty immediately began advising transfer, returning and continuing students. The culminating event for RAMDITION is the March Under the Arch, which takes place Saturday, August 17, at 10am. This is a special tradition that was established at WSSU three years ago, when University College was under the direction of Dr. Michelle Releford. The march of the freshmen has become the signature event that denotes the beginning of the matriculation of freshmen at WSSU. It is a heartwarming procession to witness. Everyone is invited to attend. The procession is followed by a keynote address for the freshmen in K.R. Williams Auditorium, after which the campus will be the site of a community picnic and a chance to meet the members of the 2013 RAMS football team. We hope to see you there. Dean Bailey expressed her delight with Fran’s selection, commenting, “Fran has been an active member of the Business Advisory Council since she first joined. I am thrilled to have her as Chair because I know she will do good things.” Chancellor’s Scholars learn about the SBE and its Finance Lab Participants included Chancellor’s Scholars, Aquilla Barrett, Lanazha Belfield, Gloriah Blackwell, Deandria Bryant, Destinie Chambers, Ebonie Dockery, Beverly Dosso, Asia Dukes, Arthia Harris, Shannon Howard, Megan Hudson, Jada Johnson, Alexis McCrea, Uzoji Nwanaji-Enwerer, Cynthia Ramos, Kiana Rushdan, Christopher Shew, Kaley Skantz, Alex Sumner, and Mona Zahir. He has been on the Dean’s List since enrolling at WSSU in 2011, has been honored as the Student of the Month by the Winston-Salem State University Honors Program, and was awarded an Academic Achievement Scholarship since his initial year. This past summer, Keon applied for and was accepted into the INROADS placement program. INROADS is the nation’s largest non-profit source of undergraduate internships for diverse youth. Students in the program receive on -going coaching, support and a unique skills development plan. Through their partnership with JCPenney he was able to participate in the Emerging Leader Internship program. This is very impressive for a young man from Rich Square, North Carolina, a town in the northeastern part of our state with a population of 958 according to the 2010 U.S. Census. In his immediate family, he is the first to both graduate high school and attend college. That doesn’t take into account his extended family’s dedication as RAMS. He is continuing a family legacy as the fourth member to attend WSSU. With 5% of the Rich Square population attending WSSU since 1996, the equivalent nationally would represent almost 1.3 million students in the same 17-year period! Keon expressed his future intention to continue his education by pursuing an MBA and to then join a Fortune 500 company as a Human Resource Manager followed by work as an entrepreneur in his own event management company. Keon asked that he be provided with an opportunity to extend his appreciation to individuals who helped to support him in the pursuit of his goals, commenting, “I particularly express my thanks to my entire family for all of their love, support and belief, to Dr. Soncerey Montgomery and Ms. Carolyn Thomas for their continued efforts in playing a very significant and influential role in my collegiate experience, and to Amaya Turner and Ayanna Puryear for being there for me whenever needed to provide advice, share a laugh, to motivate me to At WSSU, Keon stays exceptionally go above and beyond, and to share their busy with a number of outside interests beyond the completion of his degree.
