A Message from Dean
Bailey
There is a lot of interest in the
importance of gender equity
nowadays. The
recent decision to
allow women to
assume combat roles
in the U.S. military
makes us all aware of
how far our nation
Dr. Jessica Bailey and the world has
come; yet incidents
like the notorious New Delhi rape
case make us all aware of how far
we still need to go.
WSSU and the SBE are
continuing the trend of enrolling
approximately twice as many
females as males, a rate that is not
inconsistent with national trends.
Gender ratios among college
students have been skewing in favor
of females for many decades.
We are cognizant; however, of
the fact that the advancement of
our female students does not,
necessarily, mean that the status of
our male students is diminished in
any way. All students are welcome
to join any of our active student
organizations and both male and
female athletes are handled with
care. The SBE remains committed
to assuring that all of our students,
regardless of gender, can be offered
an educational experience of the
highest quality.

SBE students to participate in the College Fed Challenge
The Board of
Governors of the
Federal Reserve
System (the Fed) and
the Federal Reserve
Bank of Richmond hold
an annual competition each November
to enable college students to become
more knowledgeable about the Fed and
its decision making and monetary policy
setting activities. For the past number
of years, the WSSU School of Business
and Economics has been represented in
Charlotte where our economics and
business students undertake research,
analyze data and recommend a specific
course for monetary policy. They then
make presentations and
recommendations before a panel of
judges. The judges then have 10 or 15
minutes to ask questions related to the
team’s understanding of economics,
monetary policy and the role of the
Fed. Questions may be probative,
interpretive, hypothetical or historical
in nature.

DātaMax Foundation Awards Grant to the Center for Entrepreneurship
The School of Business and
Economics is pleased to announce the
receipt of a $40,000 grant from the
DātaMax Foundation to support the
WSSU Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE).
The Center continues to contribute to
the economic development of our
community with job creation and the
growth of new businesses, through the
activities of the business incubator at
the Eastside Enterprise Center.
DātaMax has a history of support of
the Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE)
dating back to its initial grant in 2008
which helped the development of the
Center in its organizational infancy.
Since that time, the Center has
established itself as a leader in
providing assistance to small businesses,
not-for-profit social entrepreneurship
projects and other ventures that
support the growth of the WinstonSalem community. Specifically, the
Center works to support entrepreneurial
vision in some of the poorest census
tracts surrounding WSSU and the
Piedmont Triad Research Park. The
support of DātaMax will help to convert
dreams and business concepts into
strong business plans and technically
sound proposals that will secure funding
from relevant sources. The CFE provides
continuous consultancy and strategic
business advice to new business
startups. This grant contributes to the
vision of the CFE of a partnership for a
brighter future for all of Winston-Salem.
It is a model for similar communities
across the nation.
The SBE is extremely grateful for
the generosity of DātaMax in support of
the Center for Entrepreneurship.
