GOAL
The goal of this course is to prepare and build competencies of National Board Certified
Teachers (NBCTs) to facilitate small groups of National Board candidates as they
undergo the process of National Board Certification (NBC). The course will develop a
common language, philosophy, mind set, beliefs and behaviors that are appropriate for
an NBCT Facilitator. Main outcomes of the course will ensure that the ownership of the
assessment process belongs to the candidate not the facilitator, that the emphasis is on
professional development in strengthening an analytical, reflective teaching practice, not
on following prescribed steps to become certified
COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES
Facilitators will be given the opportunity to:
1. Understand the facilitative role of a candidate support provider
2. Have current knowledge and understanding of the NBPTS assessment process.
3. Be willing and able to accommodate the individual needs of candidates.
4. Be able to guide candidates to official information in clarifying candidate
misconceptions, misunderstandings and misdirection throughout the completion of
the National Board Certification process.
5. Follow National Board guidelines for ethical candidate support.
6. Learn to provide intellectual, logistical, emotional and technical candidate support
7. Provide nonjudgmental, honest, constructive, professional and knowledgeable
