Williams, M.Ed., NBCT, UCCS Coordinator/Instructor - NBC Program Home Office 970-249-8224; E-mail nbct@att.net ___________________________________________________________________________________ GOAL The goal of this course is to prepare and build competencies of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) to facilitate small groups of National Board candidates as they undergo the process of National Board Certification (NBC). The course will develop a common language, philosophy, mind set, beliefs and behaviors that are appropriate for an NBCT Facilitator. Main outcomes of the course will ensure that the ownership of the assessment process belongs to the candidate not the facilitator, that the emphasis is on professional development in strengthening an analytical, reflective teaching practice, not on following prescribed steps to become certified COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES Facilitators will be given the opportunity to: 1. Understand the facilitative role of a candidate support provider 2. Have current knowledge and understanding of the NBPTS assessment process. 3. Be willing and able to accommodate the individual needs of candidates. 4. Be able to guide candidates to official information in clarifying candidate misconceptions, misunderstandings and misdirection throughout the completion of the National Board Certification process. 5. Follow National Board guidelines for ethical candidate support. 6. Learn to provide intellectual, logistical, emotional and technical candidate support 7. Provide nonjudgmental, honest, constructive, professional and knowledgeable support. 8. Promote collaborative relationships in a reflective learning community of facilitators and candidates Materials: (Materials and books provided by district lead facilitator or purchased by NBCT participant) 1) A Handbook for What National Board Facilitators Should Know and Be Able to Do compiled by the lead facilitator of the course. 2) Support material, readings published by NBPTS. 3) Jump Start the Adult Learner by Laurie Materna, 2007. Participant Responsibilities: Participants will apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes learned in the course by participating in a practicum, field experience with National Board candidates in the March and April Candidate Support Classes. Schedule of Class Topics, Activities, and Responsibilities UCCS National Board Certification Program NBCT Facilitator Training Course February (8 hours) Formal Training - Learning the basics for quality facilitation of small candidate groups undertaking the National Board Certification process March, April Candidate Support Class (minimum of 7 hours) Practicum – attending and applying knowledge, skills and attitudes learned in training by engaging with NB candidates in the National Board Candidate Support Class.
