Recreation Center Expansion & Wellness Center Project
UCCS Facilities Services
JANUARY-MARCH 2015
By: Charles Cummings
It has been a muddy, snowy winter as Saunders Construction has prepared the site
for the new Recreation Center addition, but the university community will soon see
the building rise out of the ground. Construction of the footings will be complete
by the end of March and when students return from spring break they will see the
precast concrete walls of the new gymnasium set in place. The steel frame of the
building will be built during April, and installation of the exterior walls of the building will commence in May.
Thank you for your patience with the relocated entry desk. The temporary desk was
necessary to allow build out of the new SOLE space. SOLE will incorporate the climbing wall, a new workshop, and a new glass roll up door on the front of the building to
allow easy equipment access. The SOLE program will be relocated to the new space
next term.
Thank you for your patience with the construction around the building site as we grow!

A 50th Anniversary Bus
The UCCS float
Due to the celebration of
our big 50th anniversary,
the UCCS community was
granted the honor of being
the Grand Marshall for the
Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.
There was an abundance of
green, glee, and good luck
to be had all around.

UCCS FACILITIES SERV ICES
The “Snowpocalypse”
Snow season is a busy time for
Facilities Services. It’s like tax
season for accountants. We
knew it would be busy and
mentally prepared ahead of
time. The weekend of February
21, the weather reports were
saying we could have had as
much as two feet of possible
snow. Let the preparations
begin.
We started by creating a sleeping room with cots, for those
who would be participating in
snow removal. Then we created a hydration-no-starvationstation. This helped to not only
keep the guys hydrated, and
fed, but also caffeinated.
Although the conditions were
bad they weren’t worst-
snowstorm-in-twenty-years-bad.
That being said, the resources devoted to this storm were still significant.
And here’s a quick picture of the
schedule for snow removal over the
weekend:
It began Saturday at noon and went
through until 1:30am on Sunday.
After a few hours of rest, snow
removal was back on at 8am Sunday
morning until 10:30pm.
Most of us jumped for joy when the
announcement for a snow day was
made. While we were out sledding
or enjoying our fireplaces, the Facilities Services snow removal team
was making sure we had a safe and
accessible campus to return to.

Helpful Moving Tips
Moves are the most common customer request
processed through the
work order system. Rick Landis, the
maintenance supervisor, is consequently
the most informed. He has provided
some helpful tips in order to ensure our
customers are on the same page and that
we are operating at our most efficient
capacity.

Customer Submits work request

Please pack up all personal belongings (move team will not
touch personal belongings)

Please be sure desk is completely empty of all items

If you will want file cabinets
moved as well, please be sure all
drawers are totally empty

Furniture that is not emptied


will not be moved, due to
possibility of injury to move
team

Please prep before your
move, this will help our
move team tremendously,
and we greatly appreciate it
If you have any questions
please call us at Facilities
and we will be happy to
assist

Thank you for your cooperation
The earlier you can put your
move request in the better,
last minute requests may or
may not be accommodated
due to our team’s current
workloads

It’s a Cleanly Life For Me
Meet Victoria Lindgren:
The first thing you should know
about Victoria is that she is the
proud owner of a baby blue electric scooter named Piglet, whom
she is very protective of.
Victoria started in the UCCS
Facilities Services Custodial department in August of 2014. Before this position she worked
for Centura Health for 9 years, and estimates
that she has been working in the housekeeping
line of work for approximately 40 years.
Victoria’s mother was born and raised in Italy.
Although she can still be considered an authentic Italian, Victoria’s favorite food is the power
nachos, at Jose Muldoon’s, accompanied by a
margarita.
Her mother had a gift for crocheting, crossstitching, and knitting. She considered it an art
form, and she eventually passed it along to her
daughter.
Even though Victoria’s shift starts at 3:30 pm
and ends at 12:00 am, she is a very alive and
thriving member of our team. Part of this is
very likely due to her nature as a night owl.
However, a greater portion is probably due to
her fight with breast cancer. Victoria was diagnosed in February of 2012 and is about to ap-
proach her third year of NED
(no evidence of the disease).
There is no proper way to sum
up a woman’s struggle with
breast cancer. It can only be said
that she is a stronger woman for
it and is
consequently
very
passionate
about
the lack
of realism within the breast cancer “awareness” industry.
Victoria’s favorite thing about
working at Facilities Services is
the building that she occupies
(Lane Center) as well as her
partner, Scott McFarland.
Their partnership is like gears
working in sync. They each have
their strengths that compliment
the others’ in a work environment. Even though each has
their favorite half of the duties,
they are completely capable of
the others’ as well. In fact they
“I am a ferocious
knitter and
crocheter.”
switch duties for two
weeks, every six weeks.
This is the perfect balance
to allow them to take advantage of their individual
talents as well as remain
updated in all aspects of
the job.
Thank you Victoria, for all the
hard work you put in, the fight
that you have endured, and the
smile you bring to our faces.
