Date: Time: Place: Program: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 9:00 a.m. coffee – 9:30 a.m. program CHRIST MEMORIAL CHURCH, GATHERING PLACE 21 Sundays: Ben Reuschel Our August meeting will feature Ben Reuschel, a thru-hiker of the Appalachian Trail. Ben accomplished this feat of hiking 2,172.7 miles in 142 days in 2004. Only one of five who ever tried to accomplish this goal of completing the trail as a thru-hiker. The Appalachian Trail, or simply the AT, is a foot trail traversing the mountain crests of the Appalachian Mountains from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. It passes through 14 states, eight national forests, two national parks and across 15 major rivers. The inception of the idea of the AT was by Benton MacKaye, a forester in 1921. He realized the importance of preserving our wilderness in a fast developing industrialized nation. It became part of the National Park System in 1968 and today is managed by them and the nonprofit Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The trail is maintained by 30 trail clubs and multiple partnerships. Ben Reuschel is currently a detective with the Holland Police Department. He was raised in Overisel, Michigan and attended Hamilton High. He spent 3 ½ years at Grand Valley State before taking a semester off to hike the AT. After finishing the trail he wrapped up his degree and enrolled in the Police Academy and was selected as the Recruit Commander. Upon completion he was hired full time by the Holland Police Department where he had previously been working as a cadet since graduating high school. After a year working road patrol he started graduate school at Grand Valley and attended full time while working the road. He finished his Masters in Public Administration in April 2010. Last October Ben took a position in the detective bureau running a covert surveillance detail. He currently lives in Zeeland with his wife Carolyn, cats – Zeke and Phoebe, and a yellow lab – Belle. Please join us for this presentation chronicling Ben’s 2004 hike of the 2,174 mile Appalachian Trail. Along the way he learned that the greatest challenge lies within and the journey was the destination. MEMBERSHIP HASP Annual Dues notices and renewals have been mailed to you. He researched long to find those jokes So meetings began with chuckling folks. With Kim – a great partner – he worked full well To make sure we had happy personnel. He opened and closed meetings promptly on time And shared other talents – too many to rhyme. You’ll note that we never dunned him for proof Of birth beneath our American roof. And now he has earned the badge of esteem For being the leader of our HASPers team. Our thanks to you, Jerry.” Peg then presented Jerry with the HASP President’s pin. President VanWyngarden then offered his closing remarks. He thanked the membership and Board for their work and support this past year and for the pleasure of serving.
