MacKeigan, PhD, VanAndel Research Institute Systems biology looks at the living cell as a large assemblage of interacting molecules and aims to determine when and how these molecules interact. This knowledge may then be used to understand, for example, how a disease such as cancer begins and spreads. Jeff MacKeigan’s lab studies in particular enzymes: “kinases” are enzymes that add a phosphate chemical group onto a molecule in the cell, and “phosphatases” are enzymes that remove a phosphate group from a molecule. Many of these enzymes have roles in the continued survival of the cell and in suppression of tumors. This lecture will highlight the most current research and therapeutic drug discovery efforts targeting these genes in cancer. Dr. MacKeigan received his Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2002, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with John Blenis at Harvard Medical School. In 2004, he joined Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as an investigator and project leader in the Molecular and Developmental Pathways expertise platform. Dr. MacKeigan, who joined the Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) in 2006, is an Associate Professor. Please join us for this exciting and informative program! Committee News: The HASP membership committee has made a few changes to the application procedure. A new cover letter has been attached to the application. The cover letter explains membership requirements as stated in the HASP constitution and includes the procedure for submitting the completed application. A new form is also being given to membership mentors. Mentors are now being asked to write a short paragraph about the person they are sponsoring. We hope this will help us get better acquainted with our new members. We have designed a questionnaire that will be sent to members one year after they join HASP. We are looking forward to receiving their positive comments and suggestions for improving the first year experience for new members. The first group of questionnaires will be mailed in late October. Any comments or questions about these changes may be directed to membership chairperson, Bonnie Cowie, at 616-786-2465 or dbcowie@sbcglobal.net. NEW DATE: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 8:15-9:00 a.m., Donnelly Room, Haworth Center This is an opportunity for new members to meet the HASP Board of Directors and learn more about the history of HASP and all the opportunities HASP offers. It is also a great time to have your questions answered! New members who have been received since May 2012 will receive further information in the mail as the time approaches. CURRICULUM Please note that the fall curriculum calendar and course descriptions are available on our website for your reference: www.hope.edu/hasp Great Decisions speaker change: The October 29 speaker for Energy Geopolitics will be Joel Toppen, NOT Virginia Beard. REVISION TO A COURSE DESCRIPTION! The Palestinian Christians sessions on October 31 and November 7 and 14 involve a slight change in focus. Instead of dealing with Kairos Palestine, the focus will be on Kairos USA (an American response to the plight of Christians in Palestine.) During the sessions we will: 1.) Listen to stories coming out of that land. 2.) Engage in theological reflections (e.g. the promise of “land”). 3.) Try to understand the role of nonviolent actions. 4.) Learn how to advocate with government and others for change. More information can be found by going to: www.kairosusa.org. Handouts will be available. Thinking of Submitting a Proposal for a Course in the Winter/Spring Semester? Often their photographs focus on a single poignant human moment which gives a visceral experience to the viewers, and mirrors their society. Their featured subjects live in northern India and Nepal. SERVICE Additional Volunteers Needed for Hope Classes, Fall, 2012 Thanks to all of you who volunteered for Hope College classes. All of the requests last month were filled, some with extra volunteers. If you were one of those who volunteered but was not needed, here is an opportunity for 24 volunteers. Either send the form at the end of this article to the HASP office or e-mail tanis@hope.edu or you may call me at 396-2228 for additional information. Elliot Tanis Professors Carrie Bredow and Sonja Trent-Brown (Psychology) would like HASP volunteers for their Developmental Psychology classes. Those who have participated in the past have spoken highly of their experience. You will meet with 3 or 4 groups of 5 or 6 students and share your insights as you reflect on your adult years and respond to questions from the students. Carrie Bredow’s classes meet on Wednesday, December 5, 8:25 - 9:20 and 9:25 -10:20. Sonja Trent-Brown’s classes meet on Thursday, December 6, 9:30 10:45 and 3:00 - 4:15. They would like 6 HASP volunteers for each of these sections, a total of 24 volunteers. I am willing to volunteer. Indicate the Professor and time/date preference. _______________________________________________________________________________ Name_______________________________ Phone______________ e-mail__________________ SPECIAL EVENTS The trip to Chicago October 25, 2012, is FULL. As you learned at our Annual Business meeting we will start our monthly program meetings for the next year 10 minutes early to spend a little time remembering our beginnings! Below is the history shared by charter member Vern Boersma at our September 4, 2012, meeting: PLANTING HASP SEEDS Back in 1986, John Hollenbach was discussing and arousing interest with friends about the concept of forming learning in retirement group. He collared a group of seven who agreed to help: Lars Granberg, Paul Fried, Dalton McFarland, Myrt de Velder, Jack Nyenhuis, John Jacobsen and myself. We met once a month and featured a prestigious speaker. Guests were welcomed and encouraged. It was well received. One evening in 1987, a just retired Zeeland High English teacher, Evie Smallegan, was giving a book report in the Zeeland Library and noticed both John Hollenbach and his wife, Winnie, in the audience. She wondered what prompted their interest in the book she was presenting, since it was nothing she figured would interest them. After the presentation they approached her and admitted that their main reason for coming was “that John needed women”. Evie replied that this was the first time she had heard of a man bringing his wife along, while looking for another woman. They explained that John needed women in his newly organized learning in retirement group and she would be an ideal member. Evie accepted the challenge and became his secretary and administrator, as well as a recruiter of more women. This is how the charter group acquired 7 women by charter time in May 1988. HASP needed an official board that could assist John and Evie running the newly formed club. They appointed a board with Evie as non-voting secretary, Lars Granberg was appointed president and I was named treasurer. Dues were set at $25.00. Evie worked for free for a year or more but HASP grew so well, that she was named Executive Director and given a salary. By 1992-93, we had 100 members and I felt the treasurer’s job should be filled by an accountant. Don Den Uyl was joining the club and he was an accountant CPA. I persuaded him to take over my job and we arranged a meeting for transferring records. The first question he asked me was about paying Evie’s Social Security and Withholding. I told him that her salary was small and she and I had decided she could just report it on her income tax. He informed my differently! I asked him what kind of accounting he had done and he said, “I worked for the IRS.” He did not report me! John Hollenbach was very eager to have more than just a monthly meeting and particularly interested in developing mini courses. He did a great deal of research preparing to accomplish this and examined numerous programs already developed. Lars Granberg and I took two trips with him, one to Madison, Wisconsin, and one to Milwaukee. Of course, you have heard from Dr. Nyenhuis, of his trip to Eckert College in Florida with Dr. Jacobsen and Dr. John Hollenbach. Dr. Hollenbach also made a visit to Ohio Wesleyan College in Delaware, Ohio, which is near Columbus. Apparently he was so enthused by this visit that he stayed longer than he should have and yet decided to try to make it back to Holland that night. They reached northern Ohio just as a snow storm made driving almost impossible and Evie had to keep her head out of the window the rest of the way home, to inform John if he was on or off the road. She stayed completely frozen for a few days and thawed out a week later. As a factor in the development of mini courses Evie played a vital role. Dr. Bernard Meeuwsen and I were actually in charge of procuring the prestigious speakers but we got altogether too many scientific presentations. Bill Bloemendaal said “there is more to life than just science” and he gladly replaced us. He too was very instrumental in developing our wonderful MINI courses and is much appreciated. Of course it was John’s desire, determination and many hours of hard work which is predominately responsible for the success of HASP but Evie and Hope College were great booster. Hope College has subsidized us for 25 years. Thanks Hope and Go Hope!
