The Atlantic City of the Midwest – A History of Ottawa Beach
From the time of Native Americans, through the heyday of summer resort hotels, to the community of today,
Ottawa Beach stands as a premier example of summer cottage resorts that developed along the Lake Michigan
shore during the late nineteenth century. Travel back in time and enjoy a morning discovering the inception and
continuance of the second oldest planned community in the United States. Members of the Historic Ottawa
Beach Society will share with you images and stories about Ottawa Beach. From the Ford family to Old Albert,
meet the visitors, residents, and characters who have called Ottawa Beach home. Entertaining, edifying time
travel, architecture, natural features, sports, leisure activities, personalities, community, transportation…
something for everyone. Included will be discussion of the sole surviving structure of the Hotel Ottawa
complex, the pumphouse, a splendid example of industrial architecture, and future plans for this building.
Nancy Gillette, President, Historic Ottawa Beach Society
Loving every minute of growing up in Holland, Nancy attended Holland High School, was a Dutch dancer,
campfire girl and attended Hope Church. “My parents bought our cottage at Ottawa Beach the year I was
born….and I have never spent summer anywhere else. Climbing Mt Pisgah, swimming, sailing, fishing, going
to the pavilion, sunsets, and beach friends are all about who I am.”
In addition to the decades of beach summers, Nancy has dedicated herself to using her nursing skills, a BSN
from the University of Michigan, in a variety of settings including hospitals, Hospice, American Red Cross
disasters, and leading medical mission teams to Nicaragua several times a year. Serving on boards, committee
and organization involvement, marriage and raising a family fill out Nancy’s time. Ottawa Beach continues to
be Nancy’s place for relaxation, reflection and friendship.
Joyce Flipse Smith, Secretary, Historic Ottawa Beach Society
A year round resident of Ottawa Beach for the last forty years, Joyce has witnessed and participated in the
evolution of Ottawa Beach from cottage community to a Historic District and park destination.
Growing up on Long Island Sound and the Chesapeake Bay, the transition to another large body of water came
naturally. An avid water person, arts lover and natural foodie…the shores of Lake Michigan and the historic
nature of Ottawa Beach were a perfect fit for her to raise two sons. Attending Hope College in the sixties and
graduating from the University of Kansas, Joyce returned to Holland and made it home in 1967. Ten years with
the Hope College Theatre program, establishing the first gallery in downtown Holland, care giving, and
problem-solving for local industries still allowed ample time for world travel and grand adventures with family
and friends. Joyce confesses that a quiet evening on the porch of her cottage watching the afterglow of sunset
1
spread glorious color over the boats and Mac hills is her favorite place to be, despite the winters that must be
weathered to get to these moments.

SERVICE
Holland Museum and Cappon House/Settlers House In Need of Volunteers
The Service Committee has received a request for volunteers from Taylor Wise-Harthorn, Museum and Gallery
manager of the Holland Museum. Her primary need is docents and education docents for the Cappon House
and Settlers House. Requirements for becoming a docent include: (1) A one to two hours orientation including a
walk through of both homes, (2) monthly gallery training from 10 to 11/11:30 once a month on the third
Tuesday or Saturday, and (3) shadowing two different docents on two separate occasions (education docents
would need to shadow at least two education tours).
Both houses are open May through the fall from 12-4 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Docent shifts are 4 hours
each day. Each docent is asked to volunteer at least 1-2 times each month. Currently there are 50/60 docents on
call for the Holland Museum and Cappon House and Settlers House, many of which are HASP members.
A history background is not required…just an interest in learning and a high level of enthusiasm! New docent
training begins monthly.
If interested please call Taylor direct at 796-2080 or email twiseharthorn@hollandmuseum.org.
Volunteer Opportunity for United Way Day of Caring
The Service Committee of HASP has again been invited to recruit a team of HASP members to participate in
the Greater Ottawa County United Way Day of Caring to be held on Sept. 19, 2013 (Thursday). This is a
county wide effort for teams of local volunteers to provide services for non-profits. It will involve less than 4
hours of service (probably in the afternoon) and we will be assigned a project suitable for seniors. Last year we
3
provided services to the Boersma Cottage at Resthaven on 40th street. Please consider joining our HASP team
of volunteers for this event. For further information or to put your name on the volunteer list please contact
Janice Fike at jfike9@gmail.com. Thanks!

October – Pullman Historic District: Saturday, October 12, 2013, 8:00AM-7:00PM
On Saturday, October 12, HASP members can enjoy a day trip that includes art and industry. Following an
8:00 AM departure from the Hope football stadium on Fairbanks Ave & 13th Street, we will travel to Indiana for
a tour of the unique chapel on the campus of Valparaiso University. The stained glass Munderloh windows
depict Creation, Redemption and Sanctification. These windows open our eyes and minds and senses to the
mysteries of our faith.
Then on to the Chicago area of Pullman for lunch at the Pier 37 Harborside Bar and Grill located on a beautiful
golf course just east of Pullman on the edge of Lake Calumet.
Next stop is to the town of Pullman just a quarter mile west of the restaurant. Back in the 1880’s it was called
“The Greatest City” with its own church, The Greenstone Church, the Florence Hotel, and the distinctive
“Row” houses built for the many families who worked in the Pullman shops making beautiful Pullman Sleeping
Cars. George M. Pullman developed his planned community with 900 houses, some of which we will be able to
visit on our tour. Some of these houses today sell for several hundred thousand dollars. In all, we will visit
about 7 of these homes now owned by individuals who have renovated them with their own “piece of history”.
You will enjoy strolling through this famous landmark historical district with lots of trees and gardens. We will
return to Holland by approximately 7:00 PM.
Some steps are involved visiting the homes but the rest of the area is accessible to everyone.
Cost per person for the day is $55.

The six standing committee Annual Reports were also included in the June 2013 monthly bulletin for review. President
VanEyl asked if there were any questions from the membership regarding these reports and there were none.

President VanEyl then asked members to join him in a time of silence as we remembered the HASP members who have
died this last year. We fondly remember their contributions to the Academy and their friendship. President VanEyl read
each name as Kim Mendels lit a candle for each deceased member and they remained lit for the duration of the meeting.

President VanEyl then introduced President elect Ed Anderson and he gave his remarks. Ed thanked Phil VanEyl for this
faithful service and for continually reminding us of our need to pay attention to our roots. President VanEyl continuously
reminded us of what our name means:
Hope: attached to Hope College and committed to its welfare
Academy: a group committed to life long learning and teaching
Senior: but staying young – as Henry Ford once said, “anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone
who keeps learning stays young.”
Professionals: made professional by our collective experiences, and therefore have much to teach each other.
Ed Anderson then presented President VanEyl with the HASP president’s pin in appreciation for his service to HASP.
President VanEyl and Executive Director Kim Mendels then presented the HASP Distinguished Service Award.
President VanEyl reported that the Executive Committee met on March 5, 2013, to review criteria and nominations. The
committee unanimously voted to select Bill and Judy Parr as the 2013 recipients. Due to the criteria that only one award
is given per year, the committee still decided to award it to them as a couple and let them decide how to split the exempt
from one annual dues portion of the award. Bill and Judy Parr were then called forward and presented with the
Distinguished Service Award and thanked the Academy members for such an honor.
President VanEyl then introduced HASP member Louise Peppel who came forward and explained to the membership how
the song she penned, “Hail to HASP” came to be. Kerry Daab then accompanied Louise Peppel, Amy Berarducci, Diane
Daab, Dianne Ritsema and Bob Weber as they sang “Hail to HASP” for the membership. The membership was then
asked to join in singing it together and the words were printed in our annual meeting program:
Hail to HASP (To the tune of “The Bear Went Over the Mountain”)
By Louise Peppel in recognition of the Silver Anniversary of the founding of HASP
Oh, you’re never too old to learn,
to think, to mull, to yearn.
Philosophy, science or math,
literature, rhyme or graph.
From eight or nine little groups
we’ve grown to 99 troupes
with many a member involved
our search for learning evolved.
It began with desires to grow
beyond college courses or so,
to think in a brand-new way
or dream of a future day.
We hope that we’d found a way that
our founders had hoped for and prayed
to help members grow in new ways
to enhance life’s retirement days.
We sought and we found a way
to offer new courses each day.
Professors and members alike
could teach and help in our plight.
So this day we all give a cheer
to our HASP in its 25th year.
To founders, Hope College and all
we’ll cheer for our HASP one and all.
The meeting was then adjourned. Happy 25th Anniversary to HASP!
Respectfully submitted,
Kimberly Mendels, Executive Director
