Where is Vicksburg?
Why was Vicksburg so important?
● Vicksburg was important because it was close to the
mississippi and had special features that helped the
south contain the union. That would help them stay
alive and well. The union had to win but they would
get the turning point of the war and have a clearer
view to beating the Confederacy.

● This plan was never really told to the people but they
still did some parts of it.

because this was the last part of the Anaconda plan
the union needed to win.

● The union had to cross the Mississippi river to fight
from a different standpoint.
● They had to cut off the southern railroad at Jackson
● But also get to the place were they needed to be,

main food train that hauled

Where is Gettysburg, PA?
Why do Historians argue that Gettysburg was
the turning point in the war?
● It was one of the first main victories for the Union and
showed that General Robert E. Lee was vulnerable.
● It made people realize that too many people were
dying and that this war would not end quickly.
Who were the two most important generals
in the battle of Gettysburg (both for the
Confederacy and for the Union)?
● The most important general for the Confederacy was
General Robert E. Lee and the most important general
for the Union was General George Gordon Meade.

seems like he uses the word for the union he is talking

● Repeats words to sound more powerful.

● Lincoln mentions the Declaration of

When Lincoln uses the word “we” in his
speech he is talking about America, but
more specifically the people who have not
fought in the war yet.

Smoothbore Musket
Muskets
These muskets were less accurate than the Rifle
Musket because the gun had a smooth-walled
barrel.
Rifle Musket
These muskets were made to have better
accuracy and range then the Smoothbore
Musket because of the grooves in the barrel.
Sharps Rifle
This gun is a breech loading gun with a
rifled barrel, and could be loaded and
fired faster than a muzzle loader.
Revolver
This gun was carried by cavalrymen and officers.
● Minie balls were the bullets used in
the guns because when fired, the
bullets would expand in size and
spiral and bore themselves into
cartilage and bones causing huge
wounds in the flesh.
Swords were carried by cavalry men
and officers.
Bayonets were attached to the top of
the musket for hand-to-hand combat.
