The Union Army defeated the main Southern army and ended its invasion of the North.
Lee lost onethird of his army in the 3 day battle.

Confederacy in 2 this was 1 of the 3 goals of the Anaconda Plan.
5. How did Sherman’s victory at Atlanta affect the election of 1864?
The North was war weary.
The Democrats had nominated George McClellan on a peace platform this had a lot of appeal to many people.
With Sherman’s capture of Atlanta the North “smelled victory”.
6. How was Sherman’s March to the Sea different from other military campaigns in the Civil
War?
A main goal of the march was to destroy the South’s warmaking ability.
This included railroads, towns, crops, etc.
Many historians see this as the first example of “total war” as was practiced in World Wars I & II.
7. Why do you think Grant gave generous terms of surrender to Lee?
The war was over the South was defeated.
It was time to let the nation start to heal.
Harsh terms would have only added to bitter feelings.
