Students will approach math from a visual and logical standpoint, analyzing geometric figures and developing the concept of proof. Students will also strengthen algebraic knowledge while building problem-solving skills and test-taking strategies. Textbook: Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge (McDougal/Littell) Course Standards: Students will: Strengthen algebraic understanding and application Improve problem-solving ability Develop visualization and logic skills Understand how the world can be modeled using geometry Understand and apply the concepts of congruence and similarity Prove geometric concepts using two-column and paragraph proofs Use properties of right triangles to solve geometric problems Develop and use trigonometry to solve problems Calculate areas and volumes using geometric principles Prove relationships in a coordinate plane Apply geometric principles to constructions General Outline of Topics Introduction to Geometry Basic Concepts and Proofs Transformations Congruent Triangles Lines in the Plane Parallel Lines and Related Figures Lines and Planes in Space Polygons Similar Polygons Pythagorean Theorem/Right Triangle Trigonometry Circles Area, Surface Area and Volume Constructions Grading Distribution: 25% of your grade will come from homework, quizzes, and class activities. 75% of your grade will be based on test scores! Required Materials: paper pencils/pens textbook graphing calculator class notebook dry erase marker Graphing Calculator Policy: Campbell County High School mathematics courses require the use of a graphing calculator. Students are encouraged to purchase a TI-84 Plus, which can be used for all future math courses including AP Calculus and the ACT. Calculators may be available for rent ($30 per year), but most students will save long-term by purchasing their own calculators. If you cannot acquire a calculator or a rental is not available, please contact me. Students MAY NOT use cell phones with calculator apps! (Not allowed on ACT, AP exam, etc.) Notebook Grade: Class members are required to take notes during all lessons. The notebook grade counts as one homework grade at the end of each chapter (this should help your homework grade!). **Notebook Pass: If you receive an A on a test, you will qualify for a notebook pass for the next chapter! Classwork/Homework: You will have time in class to work on most assignments, but expect 30-45 minutes of work per night outside class. Most assignments are 10 points. I typically grade 5 problems for two points each. Makeup Work: You may not make up work for UNEXCUSED absences (make sure you have absences for tests excused!!!). For EXCUSED absences, you will have as many days as you missed to complete and submit the assignment. I will post daily assignments in the classroom and on the class webpage. You are responsible for getting absences excused by the office and getting your makeup work -- don’t expect me to hunt you down and give it to you! Late Work: Two points off for a day late, half credit afterward. If late work becomes a problem, I may no longer accept late work after the third late assignment!! Quizzes: I will give 1-2 quizzes per chapter, usually announced a day in advance. Quizzes may vary in length, but will typically be similar in value to a homework assignment. Tests: I will give a test at the end of most chapters, with about a week prior notice. Expect 3-4 tests each quarter, each worth 100 points. Most tests will include a bonus problem. Barring extenuating circumstances, extended time will not be given, so it is important to work on accuracy and time management when you review. Retakes: A central focus of this course is preparing students to succeed in AP Calculus and collegiate STEM courses. As a result, I will not give retakes for regular chapter tests. Students can, however, take the Quarter Test at the end of each quarter to replace the lowest test score from the quarter. The Quarter Test is a comprehensive test over the topics from that particular quarter. A list of topics will be posted on my webpage in advance of the test date. Semester Exams: The semester exam is worth 20% of the semester grade. This grade will not affect your quarter grade; however, the final grade listed on your transcript is an average of the two semester grades, including the exams. Hall Passes: We have five minute class changes to allow for bathroom breaks, drinks, etc. I will not let students out of class on a regular basis. If you have a medical need for a hall pass have your parent contact me so accommodations can be made! Cell Phones/Electronic Devices: All cell phones, music players, and wireless devices must be put away unless the class is given specific permission to use them for educational purposes. Unauthorized devices will be confiscated and turned over to the office. End of Class: I have few pet peeves, but there is an important one: DON’T PACK UP AND STAND BY THE DOOR BEFORE THE END OF CLASS! Stay seated, keep working, and wait for the bell. Communication: We will follow a very tight schedule this year, and chances are you’re going to fall behind if you miss a day or your class period does not meet. If you are aware of potential absences or other conflicts in advance, let me know so I can create a schedule that best addresses the issue. Tutoring: I will be available after school until 2:45 most Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Also, any student who wants to stay until 4:00 and work on assignments during academic team practices (Tues/Thurs) is welcome to stay. I can also answer short questions via email. I also post videos about many class topics on my webpage. Lunch Tutoring: I am the math instructor for the school’s lunch tutoring program. Students who want to participate can bring their lunches to the Media Center, where I will be available to answer questions Class Webpage: I will post assignments daily on my class webpage on the district website. In addition, I will post links to handouts, review/remediation videos, and bonus problems. On occasion, I may teach using a “flipped classroom” and ask students to watch a videotaped lesson online as homework, allowing us to spend a full class period working in class on challenging problems. Let me know if you’d like me to a make a video on a particular topic! Email: The best way to reach me is by email at christopher.manker@campbell.kyschools.us. I check email quite often and respond pretty quickly. I rarely receive phone calls, so I tend to respond most quickly to email.
