Assignment #1 – Laboratory Safety & Equipment
Since we will be working in the chemistry laboratory this year, it is important that you become familiar with the
equipment that you will be using and the safety procedures related to the equipment. When we check into the
lab this week you will have to inventory and identify the equipment at your lab station. You will also be
expected to know what the equipment is used for. In the Course Documents section of this website you will
find a Lab Documents folder that includes a PowerPoint presentation entitled Laboratory Equipment with
pictures and descriptions of the lab equipment that you will be using this year. You will also find a file marked
Lab Safety Contract that includes safety rules for working in the chemistry lab. Your first on-line assignment
has three parts:



Open the Lab Safety Contract file in the Course Documents section and Lab Documents folder and
print a copy of the document. Then read the Safety Contract and make sure that you understand the lab
safety rules. If you understand the rules, sign the document at the bottom and bring the signed document
to class on Thursday, September 4th (the due date for this assignment). If you have any questions
about the safety rules we will discuss them in class on Thursday.
Open the Laboratory Equipment file in the Course Documents section and Lab Documents folder and
familiarize yourself with the equipment displayed in the file and what they are used for. You do not
need to print this document, but be aware that there will be a quiz over lab safety and equipment next
week, so make sure that you can identify the lab equipment and know the safety rules.
