EveryonesoElse SUMMARY (15 chapters) 17-Opens w/H at Grangerfords; they have a feud w/Shepardsons, longstanding, H disguised as George Jackson, nervous bc he’s lying; describes house w/pictures of art painted by Emmeline (who recently passes away), wrote poetry 18-H staying w/Grangerfords, separated from J; a slave takes him to see J, but J stays near the swamp; shootout between G’s and S’s; H sees Buck’s dead body and then he and J set out on the river again 19-H and J meet the the con men—duke and dauphin, H chooses to go along with them, their identity to keep the peace; doesn’t tell J the truth THEME APPEARANCE vs. REALITY 20-Question of hidden raft; they leave to go to New Orleans; D has a plan to protect H and J and pass during the night; storm approaches so J and H are suppose to stay on watch; but H is thrown overboard and then comes back on; Meet an old lady and preacher…who talks about being pirate and being by a steamboat; they return to the raft and realize they collected a sum of money 21-D and dauphin discuss performance (Hamlet); they make a poster and go into town; the colonial fights w/Boggs; all are upset that Boggs’s dead so they create a mob to attack Sherburn 22-@Sherburn’s house—mob-like mentality—transitions to circus 23-H and D and K organize a play, get angry, instead of attacking the K and D, they decide to promote the “amazing” play so that others are duped. New attendants get angry bc play is so short; D realizes audience members are carrying things so they get their money and then run 24-sets up ch. 25, K and D plan to con Wilkes family, Peter passed away; sly –get information on Peter; HUCK WOULD RATHER GO TO HELL* in CHAPTER 31~ 25-D and K go to Wilkes family dinner and they get the money 26-D and K and arrange to stay at Wilkes house and JoAnna questions HF about him being related to D and K; H is caught in a lie; The other sisters take up for H; H tries to steal the money from D and K; GREED; H leaves with $6000 in gold 27-H decides to hide money in coffin; D and K find out about H’s plan; They plan to sell J 28-M Jane is upset b.c. she doesn’t want the slave family to be broken up; H protects MJ; he writes her a note indicating where he hid the money; he sees Susan and he tells her that MJ went away bc she had the mumps; auction at end 29-@auction; REAL Wilkes brothers show up and try to prove their true identity; dig up coffin to prove identity—they find the gold in the coffin; H escapes w/J , but D and K catch up with them 30-D an K yell at H bc they think that he’s trying to leave them. H LIES and J goes along with him. D an K argue about who was going to take the money 31-J an H go down the river, away from the Wilkes’ place, attempt to con more ppl. D and K tell J and H to hide the raft; H realizes J is gone; someone finds poster for J’s return. H struggles with whether or not he should find J; D lies to him about Jim’s location Nikki-H is quick to put J up for sale (thinks about it) Alli-H is brought up to devalue J; he’s never been taught that this was unfair Tia-H thinks that he’d rather go to Hell than send the letter to Miss Watson Tia—IRONY—J and H leave for freedom and away from rules, so why do they go along with the D and K Cruz—did they do it just because it was what they were used to Jordan—they were afraid Jesse—why does H stay? Alli—H doesn’t want to cause problems Meghan— Lucy—H doesn’t like what they’re doing—attempts to give the money back Payton—H says he’s afraid of the human race Jordan-undermining them Tia—he tried to get away Jessie—H doesn’t reveal the fraud D and K; everyone believed the silly stories Meghan—portrays the people that he is coning just as stupid--*theater thing Ben—serious, yet funny at times—making fun of the human race; shows ignorance Lucy—irony—when slave takes H to see J; he expects J to be surprised, but J cries; then when H can’t find J he cries Payton—he doesn’t think of J Alli-he’s afraid to think of J Nikki—H slowly realizes that J understands him and represents a father figure Jordan—H realizes that J cares about his family DISCUSS DETAILS/…Not what if Meghan—doesn’t know how to lead—SUPPORT? Jessie-J is the best slave around; they talk to his hairball—leadership Nikki—J’s sleeping, FOCUS ON CHAPTERS NOW—naïve character and follower at the beginning Ben-Ch 31 reaches the peak of maturity; he begins to pray, before he didn’t believe in religion; he is able to judge his own morality; ironically, its not until he prays (succumbing to society’s standards) does he equalizes himself with Jim Tia—doesn’t pray---it’s all lies anyway… Support w/Text! Good job… “the words wouldn’t come”. WHAT IS THIS SIN? Ben—not until he TRIES to pray does he understand the severity of Jim’s worth. Cruz—didn’t believe in dead things—THIS CHAPTER Payton—doesn’t complain MATURE from beginning to end Allie—he offers to kill Miss Watson Payton— Tia—independent—survive on his own; Ben—gradual change; H makes the decision to go on his own so that’s a sign of maturity, but he’s always progressing Jessie-immature to want to leave because he doesn’t accept rules or face conflicts Allie—leaves bc of his dad; River SymbolismNikki-poses a question Alli-moving forward; overcoming bad things Nikki-D and D get caught on the river; Kileigh-sense of adventure Tia-H talks to Mary Jane, telling her the truth *tells the truth—may put himself in trouble; it might be easier to tell a lie than to tell the truth, but he tells it. MATURITY/GROWTH Lucy—Mary Jane says that she’ll pray for him *quote; H admires MJ for wanting to pray for him Anna—QUESTION --what is the flash from MJ’s room; Tia—a candle, a sign of her return Meghan—the feud between Shepherdsons and Grangerfords; Romeo and Juliet allusion—feud continues but no one knows why…similar to H and J Lucy—girl and boy leave ZACK AND JOHN—talking on the outside Tia—when H sees Buck die he is sad; he can’t stand to stay there any longer, he feels responsible Lucy—he sees the silliness in the feuds Payton—Wilkes adventure—to disgust the reader (wrong), H’s hiding of the money and the D and K Jordan—H lies, but his lies are not as bad D and K who hurt people…so the two are contrasted Zac—ppl are motivated by greed…like D and K
