Students will continue to build on their understanding of the dative case and how it is used when it comes to sentence structure. Objectives: SWBAT identify and explain the dative case in a sentence. SWBAT explain how Latin words came into Latin and define and explain the different Latin phrases found in English today. Activities: Students will have their final vocabulary quiz for the unit. As a class we will go over exercise 22 F which the students did as homework for the class period. As a class we will read and discuss pages 196-197 in the Ecce Romani textbook. This will show the students how Latin words came into English and will introduce the students to common Latin phrases that are found in English today. Students will work with their shoulder partners to go over a review sheet that will discuss the different concepts that the students will be tested on for their unit test. Assessment: Students will be tested on how well they understand the dative case and how it functions in a sentence in their upcoming test. Students will be tested on the word study of how Latin words go into English and the common Latin phrases found in English today. Rationale: Students need to learn what the dative case is and how it functions because students will have to understand what it is and how it works before moving on to more difficult grammar concepts. By understanding what the dative case is and how it functions students will be able to take that concept and use it when looking at Latin. By students learning and understanding this it will be an important stepping stone when it comes to learning more difficult concepts in the future. Students will need to have a good understanding of how the Latin language came into English and understand the fact that there are still many common Latin phrases that are used in English today. This will help to show the students that Latin is not a dead language and that the reason why we go over the English derivatives is to show that most of the English language comes from Latin. Academic Language: Dative Case- is a specific case that nouns can be in. The dative case looks very similar to the ablative but it functions as an indirect object in a sentence. A sentence that has an indirect object would be: I gave a gift to the girl. To the girl is the indirect object in this sentence. Adaptations/Diverse Learners: Students will be grouped up with people of varying skill level. Students who are more advanced will be grouped up with people who are at a middle skill level and those will a lower level. This way students who have an understanding of what is happening will be able to try and explain it to the ones who aren't understanding it. By having the advanced students work with the middle and lower students they will be forced to see if they can explain what is happening in different ways and let them explore the meaning more. Students in the middle and lower levels will be able to ask more questions and get the specific help that they need. Materials: Ecce Romani textbook, a computer and a projector, a whiteboard, Latin test review sheet Management Goal: ● I will keep the students on task by asking them questions as we are going over the different sentences. This will force the students to be on task and ready to answer questions. ● If students are talking about things that are not relevant to the topic of conversation I will ask them to go back to talking about Latin or English they are working on. I will also reward students who are able to get their task done before the end of class by allowing them to talk quietly amongst themselves after they have finished. ● By giving the students the opportunity to work in a group it should allow for them to be able to communicate with each other but still be on topic for what they are learning. Preparation for Learning: Students will start the class period of by completing the last vocabulary quiz for the unit. This will help to get the students thinking about Latin and will help get them focused on looking at how English words come from Latin and the different Latin phrases that are found in English today. Presentation, Integration and Application of Information: Instructional Strategy: Vocabulary Quiz: Students will take their 3rd and final vocabulary quiz for this unit. Purpose: By having students take vocabulary quizzes it will keep the students accountable for keeping up on learning their vocabulary and will allow for me to see what needs to be worked on. Time: 5-10 min Going over exercise 22F. Students were assigned to complete exercise 22 F as homework. As a class we will go over the answer to this exercise and answer any questions that came up when completing the assignment. This will allow for the students to see what they need to work on before taking the test. It will also give the students a chance to ask any questions that they have about the new concepts. 10 min This word study shows the students how Latin words are turned into English words and different Latin phrases that are common in English. By having the students work in groups it will allow for them to ask any questions that they have and will allow for them to work on figuring out the answers together. 10-20 min 20 mins Assessment: Students will have a test at the end of the unit that will have them find and explain the dative case in different sentences.
