COURSE OUTLINE Holy Rosary High School Course Social Studies 20 Teacher (s) Miss Mann Grade 11 School Year 2013-2014 Course Aim/Goals: The goal of grade eleven social studies and history is to help students understand the major issues facing humanity at the end of the twentieth century. The social studies program examines issues such as human rights, population growth, wealth creation, environmental change, and world governance. The history program examines the conditions, ideas, and events of the twentieth century which gave rise to these issues. Unit 1: Human Rights Unit 2: Population Unit 3: Environment Unit 4: Wealth/Poverty Unit 5: World Governance ASSESSMENT: There will be a Unit test after each unit and smaller assessments of the learning completed throughout. A final exam will conclude this course. COURSE EVALUATION: Assignments 45% FINAL EXAM 30% Unit Tests 25% -Final exam will be written during exam week. Formative Assessments: Students will be evaluated on numerous activities and assignments throughout each unit. Unit exams will also be worth 5% of student grade and fall into formative assessments. *Unit Exams (5) Summative Assessments: It is important to note that is there is a foreseeable conflict with personal scheduling, YOU must talk to your teacher ahead of time (days ahead of time) to rearrange or request an extension. This must be before the assignment and/or exam due date (this excludes finals) –rearrangements and/or extensions will not be given on the due date. *Final Exam L to J: There are two L to J’s in Social Studies 20. One is a key terminology L to J and one is for key people. Students will be evaluated 4 times throughout the semester on each L to J, this will evaluate progress and show growth. Learning Targets: Learning Targets will be presented to the students daily. Students will also have access to the complete learning target manual for the course that is available on jessiehmann.com. They will be presented with these targets in student friendly terms that will help students understand their tasks for the class and what they need to be able to demonstrate. Learning Targets are present on every lesson, with assessments of the learning taking place often so students can monitor their progress. Technology: Each student will have access to their MacBook Pro’s for the duration of the program. Planning for a Video Conference with a Holocaust survivor has already begun as well as other individuals from around the world. We are also looking into the possibilities of volunteering at a soup kitchen in Edmonton where students will have the opportunity to interview individuals; this will highlight the targets within our 3rd unit.
