Welcome to our KS2 SATs Information Evening Overview of Tests – this year - Externally marked: Maths English – Reading English – Grammar, punctuation and spelling Internally marked: English - Writing Relationship between KS2 tests and teacher assessment First is a snapshot ~ an indicator of where the child is. Second is a continuum ~ building on previous work, consolidating and formulating judgements about what the next stage is. SATS Timetable 2013 Monday 9th May Reading Test Tuesday 10th May English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Wednesday 11th May Arithmetic Test Thursday 12th May Mathematics Reasoning Test Paper 2 Friday 13th May None Maths Reasoning Test Paper 1 Arrangements for SATS Tests will be carried out within the children’s usual classroom with their usual teacher and LSA supporting. Some groups will have additional adults. Readers will be available for Maths and Grammar tests where children find reading difficult. We will be providing breakfast of bread and juice/milk every morning. Changes to Assessment Test content covers new curriculum Levels no longer exist Raw scores will be translated into Scaled Scores using a conversion table. A scaled score of 100 will represent National Average. Will not know what an ‘average’ raw score is until after tests are completed as no previous data to work from. Maths Test Papers Explained Two reasoning papers very similar to previous maths tests involving application of knowledge to solve problems. No mental maths test Arithmetic Test – 36 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. Questions will include mental calculation, jottings and formal written methods. Reading Paper 60 minutes to read texts and answer questions. Three/Four separate texts making up about 1800 words. Questions increase in difficulty Types of questions: - Word meaning - Retrieve information - Summarise main ideas - Predict - Explain how language choice affects meaning. - Make comparisons within text Explanation Grammar, punctuation and spelling test 45 minute test Marked out of 50 and spelling test marked out of 20 New content this year with old level 6 content being included. New Content Explanation Questions New Content Spelling Test 20 spellings generally based around spelling rules Spellings given in sentences to ensure understanding of meaning. Include Homophones English Preparation Past papers & questions Comprehension groups-afternoons REPS time for reading skills Homework linked to key areas Revision guides sent home for reading, grammar and punctuation. English At Home Reading – aim for 7mins every day; stamina, speed, confidence and fluency. Reading – ask questions to check understanding Homework - some will have a reading focus e.g. comprehension and some will have a grammar focus – these are based on their ability levels Revision guides. Learn spelling rules which are sent home Writing Teacher assessed throughout the year. Date for final assessments brought forward by a month to 27th May. Evidence of achievement must be seen across a sample of work in both English and other topics. Assessing Writing Children will be assessed to be at one of three levels. - Working towards expected level - Working at Expected Level -Working at greater depth.
