All EMERGENCY NUMBERS are in the staff room and dining room. SECURITY THE KEY YOU HAVE WILL OPEN THE OUTSIDE GATE LOCKS AND COMMON ROOMS –Staff, Gold, Cap Lamp and Gimlet Rooms. PERSON IN CHARGE check all outside door locks last thing at night. The doors are SELF LOCKING for DoE, FEDERAL RD and DOOR between dining and laundry EXIT. Please make sure GLASS DOOR is shut when you leave the site and whilst you are eating. LOCK the outer gates at night. LIGHTING Light switches in showers/toilets and large dorms are on timers and will switch off any time. Verandah lights are on light sensors and turn on at night and turn off at day light. Please turn off quadrangle spot lights for basketball and gazebo area after use. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE LIGHTS ON ALL NIGHT SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS Please SUPERVISE GROUPS AT ALL TIMES both in the dining room and when students are playing in the quadrangle. The Games Room is available for use at 6:30pm to 9:00pm under adult supervision; any other times must be in consultation with the Manager. The Group will be held accountable for any damage to these facilities. When using TV/DVD/Data Projector/etc. please FOLLOW the instructions and DO NOT let students operate. DORMITORIES No food/drink Put your sheets and pillowcases on the beds. Only use the beds where there is linen please Keep your area clean End of camp – follow dorm sign instructions. Turn off air conditioners, lights and heaters when not in use. Do not go into any other dormitory other than you own. Goldfields Camp School can arrange the following excursions, attractions and activities. We only recommend excursions that comply with the Department of Education Excursion Policy. ALL INFORMATION and BOOKINGS are made in good faith with local venues and companies and they are accurate only at time of print. The Camp School liaises with and confirms bookings with all proprietors. We, however, can take no responsibility for cancellations, change of program etc. All changes are discussed with schools as soon as they become apparent to the camp school. All venues will accept manual purchase orders so no cheques are necessary except Orana Cinema which requires payment (cash or cheque) at the time of visit Goldfields Camp School caters for visiting groups and makes particular effort to ensure that meals conform to the DoE red, amber and green health and nutrition requirements. We would appreciate if visiting groups limit student’s consumption of red foods on the journey to Kalgoorlie (particularly lollies and cool drink) and whilst at the Camp School. Red foods can be collected when students arrive and handed back for the return journey. We can provide plastic bags for this. We endeavor to provide well-balanced, nutritional food with as much variety as possible. The protein (meat, beans or eggs) and carbohydrate (bread, rice, pasta or potato) component will vary for each meal. Groups will be presented one main course and dessert for dinner. We do not cater for fussy eaters! BREAKFAST – Continental only: Selection of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast, spreads, orange and apple juice. BREAKFAST – Cooked - Choice of: Spaghetti, baked beans, bacon, poached and scrambled eggs. Bush Breakfast if requested. MORNING TEA Cakes, muffins, slices, fruit. LUNCH Meat (changes day to day – chicken, ham, burgers or beef), cheese, egg, assorted salads with buns, or wraps, fruit in season and water. DINNER – Includes main course and dessert MAIN COURSE CAN INCLUDE Roast beef and seasonal vegetables Chicken Parma, salad and garlic bread Pasta and salad with garlic bread BBQ meat (sausages, meat patties, steak, chicken kebab) and green salad, with choice of 2 salads – pasta, rice, potato and coleslaw Cottage Pie, mixed vegetables and salad Butter Chicken Curry and rice. Prior notice is needed, as this food may not be available locally. Planning and preparing the camp – liaison with the Camp Manager who will assist. Book your bus for the week. The general welfare of the students. Supervise the end of camp cleanup/maintaining camp cleanliness. Consulting with the Camp Manager on medical matters. Ensure suitable Duty of Care to minimize the risk of harm to others. Completion and return of the Camp Booking Form. Liaising with camp staff with regard to the camp programs at least one month prior to camp. Completion and return of the Camp Return Form at least two weeks prior to camp. Complying with DoE procedures and policies. Discipline and supervision of students in camp and during activities and excursions. Managing all visiting staff and helpers. Ensuring that stated rosters, competitions, policies, and programs run to time. Ensure there will be no alcohol brought on to the premises. PLEASE NOTE: *Parent helpers: Assist with domestic duties and participate in group activities. *Parent helpers should have no instructional or disciplinary responsibility. CAMP MANAGER’S ROLE The Camp Manager is responsible for general duties including camp booking, programs, requisitions, health and safety awareness, liaison with other venues and community relations. Domestic duties including Being familiar with and giving assistance with natural and social sciences pertaining to the area. Supervision of arrival and dispersal of groups. Conducting the camp school orientation. Conducting the first meal/and first breakfast. Ensuring satisfactory discipline and standards of behavior. Ensuring each group leaves the camp school in good condition. Page 23 Page | 8 CAMP PROGRAM: Allow time for passive recreation. Activities might include sport, diary writing, pre-excursion videos, reading etc. All activities must be adequately supervised. WET WEATHER ALTERNATIVES: See attractions for ideas, bring appropriate wet weather clothing and be prepared. YOU NEVER KNOW POCKET MONEY: It is suggested that pocket money be kept to a small amount as the essential requirements of camp are already here. LIGHTS OUT AND SLEEP: Especially the first night. Kids don’t recognize fatigue in them and need plenty of persuasion to go to sleep. Try making frequent dormitory checks of dorms in the first half hour after lights out and insist on absolute quiet. Students are more likely to fall asleep if they are kept quiet and still. COMMITMENT AND SAFETY: By allowing the group (and other staff) to shoulder responsibility for the camp, and therefore responsibility for the camps success or failure, they will show more commitment. If you do all the objective setting, and prior preparation and planning, odds are, you will be the most committed. Committed, aware people are generally safer, more responsive people! DORMITORY COMPETITION: Running a dormitory competition has the effect of maintaining good standards of hygiene and cleanliness, as well as developing personal pride and healthy habits, serving good discipline within the dormitories and reducing the workload involved in the camp clean up. DISCO Disco lights and a stereo sounds system with CD, iPod docking and radio and mobile trolley with DVD player and data projector available in the Gold Room and Cap Lamp Room. There is a television, DVD, CD player and video plus overhead projector available in the Gimlet Room. There is also a selection of DVD’s and videos or bring your own choice. MEALS: Depending on the program and the weather will affect the type of food offered to groups. We aim to provide tasty and nutritious meals that will tempt all age ranges. CLOTHING/ACTIVITIES: Bring the appropriate clothing for the outdoor activities ie Bush visits – hat, suitable clothing and footwear. REMEMBER: “Prior preparation and planning prevents poor performance” Page | 9 INITIAL PLANNING 1. Discuss the proposed camp with your principal, committee members and the Camp Manager 2. Read the Department’s policies on camps and excursions and activities on: http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/hpe/ and follow the links 3. Check out our website: www.goldfieldscampschool.wa.edu.au 4. Integrate the proposed camp across the curriculum 5. Arrange transport and commence to Fundraise AT LEAST ONE MONTH BEFORE YOUR CAMP 1. Send home and have returned the following forms: Parent Information, Parent Consent and Contract, Media and Video Permission. 2. Complete the Draft Itinerary form and email back to camp school on Goldfields.CS@education.wa.edu.au (Camp Manager will then forward a program draft for comment) LEADING UP TO CAMP 1. For all bookings made by the camp school we provide for ‘schools only’ on completion of your stay one invoice covering accommodation and meals. We invoice all clients at the end of the camp! 2. Complete the required Excursion Management Plans and have them signed-off by the Principal. 3. Send Clothing and Equipment Checklist home along with a copy of Camp Program with final details of camp to parents and receive payment for camp. 4. Prepare Camp Booklets, and draw up Dormitory Competition score-sheet 5. Finalize evening program and make wet weather alternatives – just in case 6. Organise a staff roster and a student Duty Roster 7. Brief all campers, including teachers and parent helpers, on roles and responsibilities – including the role of the Camp Manager and camp staff 8. Complete the Camp Policy form with students 9. Ensure that you have received from the camp school: a copy of the final itinerary and background information on pertinent excursions and activities. 10. Completed and faxed the Camp School Return form, a list of all student and staff attending the camp at least two weeks prior to arrival ARRIVAL TO CAMP 1. Meet in the Gold Room and the students will be briefed on the Camp School rules and policy. Students then begin unpacking and making their beds. 2. The Camp Manager confirms Camp School Return itinerary, security requirements and general information with Teacher in Charge. 3. The Camp Staff will conduct the first meal and explain campers’ duties for Teachers-in-Charge new to the camp school. DURING CAMP 1. Please re-read Camp Roles, specifically Camp Leader Role 2. Organise excursion thank you speakers and when in doubt liaise with Camp Manager DEPARTING CAMP 1. Students complete normal duties. Please ensure dishes, especially, are well cleaned and dry, students to clean out their dormitories, vacuum floors and make the beds as they were on arrival. 2. Prior to departing, gather students in the meeting room for debrief, camp appraisal and farewells. 3. Pick up Camp Invoice and a Camp School Feedback Form 4. Make a booking at Goldfields Camp School for the following year Page | 10 Camp Organisers/Group Adults are expected to supervise student duties. Encourage children to complete their duties quickly and effectively; however, not to do their work for them. Please note: Camp School Staff are NOT supervisors DORMITORIES 1. Make beds neatly 2. Tidy clothes, shoes and shelving. All gear off floor and put on shelves or under the bed. 3. Keep track of own gear SPORTS MONITOR 1. Collect all sports equipment after breakfast and dinner and put away in telephone box on the verandah BOYS AND GIRLS SHOWERS AND TOILET MONITORS 1. Pick up all litter (including paper towels) and press all buttons 2. Pick up lost property DINING ROOM DUTIES AND BEHAVIOUR The dining room can comfortably seat 80 up to 100 persons. The way the dining room is set up and rules are to minimize the safety risk to students. If there are several groups in at one time THEN GROUPS ARE TO BE COURTEOUS TO EACH OTHER. Children always eat before the adults. It is important that the students are familiar with their duties before they arrive. ALL DUTIES MUST BE SUPERVISED BY AT LEAST ONE ADULT, PLUS AN EXTRA ADULT TO SUPERVISE THE DISHWASHER AND RINSE THE DISHES. MEAL TIMES Breakfast – 7.30am sharp OUTSIDE THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE Dining room. – Teachers and students who are setting up are to be at the dining room at 7:15 to set up for breakfast Lunch – as required (usually off site). Morning tea is included with lunch and it is eaten as required. Dinner – 5.30pm sharp OUTSIDE THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE Dining room - Teachers and students who are setting up are to be at the dining room at 5:15 to set up for breakfast Supper – on request Students should be neatly attired at every meal inside the dining room, (no thongs, singlets, hats please.) The usual layout for tables is two tables together with 8-10 chairs. For smaller groups one table with 6 chairs. We find that students benefit from having an adult at each table to supervise students. To prevent spillages and accidents please ensure that students move in the same direction which is clockwise. Tables should go to the serving up area one at a time with everyone following in the same direction (no short cuts). This prevents accidents and as meals are often hot this avoids any child being burnt. Page | 11 TEACHERS/ADULTS Before the meal: Allocated children to various duties Supervise students to set tables as per the diagram on the pin up board in the kitchen 15 minutes before the meal. After Each Course: Ensure students are completing their duties. After breakfast load your lunches in the bus. Ensure an adult is supervising collection and stacking plates ready for washing up Adults ONLY in the dishwashing area and using the commercial dishwasher After the Meal: Adults supervise duties Leave dining room clean and tidy If you are sharing the camp with another school we strongly suggest you liaise with the group organizer of the other school. This may prevent duplication of duties and eliminate any ill feeling about who is doing what and when. TABLE SETTERS (1 per table) – Make sure there is a supervisor with you Report to dining room 15 minutes before meal times. Set tables as per diagram on notice board Place extras (water, pepper, milk, juice, bread etc.) on table WASHWIPERS (2-4 per group) only adults operate dishwasher and supervise Wash knives, forks and spoons and place in cutlery containers with forks, knives and spoons sticking out of the containers ADULTS USE SPRAY AT SINK TO RINSE DISHES ADULTS PUT DISHES THROUGH THE DISHWASHER Students dry dishes and put away all crockery and cutlery back to where they go Wipe down sinks and tidy dish washing area Put all dirty tea towels in clothes bucket near kitchen entrance or hang up tea towels on stainless steel racks DINING ROOM TIDIERS (1per table) Return milk, water containers, etc. to kitchen bench Collect cloth from washing up area Wipe all tables thoroughly. After breakfast push tables against window Sweep dining room – 2 people from dining room tidiers (brush and shovel is under the bench near kitchen entrance) LUNCH HELPERS (6 per group) After breakfast and on return to Camp School in afternoon Take lunches out to bus in morning (MAKE SURE TWO PEOPLE CARRY HEAVY ESKIES) and water containers. We have a trolley available if required On return bring eskies etc. off bus and take to corridor near kitchen entrance Wash dirty dishes. Plastic plates and cups need to have flat rack over them to prevent them falling over in the dish washer. Plastic cups must be dried with tea towels.
