Expectations
Welcome to Latin! Your study of Latin may be the most challenging thing you have ever done.
Why?
LATIN IS NOT LIKE YOUR OTHER COURSES!
Memorization.
What I expect of you



I expect you to make a positive effort.
I expect you to seek help quickly if you are confused or are starting to fall behind. (Office Hours
are good times to see me.)
I expect you to do your own work and abide by the school’s Honor Code I expect you to abide by
the “pledge” and to truthfully sign the pledge on all quizzes and tests
How you behave in this class will be an important part of your grade. There are some simple

Do not talk without being called on.
Respect your teacher and classmates.
Stay in class for the entire period (no trips to restroom, locker, etc.)
Come prepared to learn.
How you begin this course will very much determine how well you will do.
How to study and win at Latin
Review each class lesson for a few minutes before beginning the homework. Be sure you
understand it. If you are not clear about something, be sure to get assistance as soon as possible.
Daily: Review each lesson’s new vocabulary words for a few minutes each day. Be sure you have
them memorized.
Weekly: Review all current vocabulary words and the week’s lessons. Be sure you have
memorized all the words as well as the charts and that you understand grammar terms and concepts.

WHY TAKE LATIN? The study of Latin





improves English writing and speaking
helps acquire foreign languages, especially Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese,
and Romanian

Grading
Your grade is based on cumulative points. Everything that you do will have a point value. For
example, a homework assignment can be worth 10 points. A quiz is 50 points. A test can be worth 200
points. Your grade will include: homework, quizzes, tests, and classwork/participation. How you behave
in this class will affect your grade.
What to bring to Latin class
Notebook: You should keep a three-ring binder for all your papers. It will be a place for you to
keep:
 homework papers
 quizzes/tests;
 notes/handouts;
 vocabulary lists.
Textbook
Lined paper and a pen or pencil that works.
Caveat:
Food. Please do not eat or drink (except water) in the classroom. Fill your water bottles before
coming to class. Please do not chew gum.
Cell phones. With permission, phones may be used for academic purposes. They must not ever be
out during a quiz or test.

Flash cards and vocabulary lists: You will keep a list of the vocabulary from each Lesson. It must be
written or typed out by you, either on cards or in a list. It is helpful to keep flash cards in a box. If you
make lists, keep them in the vocabulary section of your Latin binder.
Quizzes
You can expect at least one quiz per week. They comprise the majority of your grade.. Some quizzes
will be on vocabulary, others on the paradigms (charts) of nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. This will cover the
vocabulary from each lesson (chapter) as well as the grammar and translation. YOU ARE ALSO
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MATERIAL IN THE PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. Each quiz is a summary
of what you have learned so far in that year.
Tests
Lesson tests will be after every Unit, therefore you can plan when to expect one. The tests will cover the
material in the previous units. For example, the Unit III Test will contain material from Units I, II, and III.
There will be a semester exam in December and a final exam in May.
Pledge. I ask each of you to sign a pledge on all quizzes and tests. To do so is to state that you have neither
received nor given any help on them. Latin students write the Latin word honore which means “with
honor” and then sign their name. Bosque School takes cheating very seriously, as do I.
If you are absent
You are responsible for keeping track of missed assignments. If you
miss class due to an appointment or a sporting event, I will expect you to find out and complete the
assignment for the next day. If you are ill, you need to see me as soon as you return so that you can arrange
to make up any missed work.
Latin is a challenging and demanding subject.

There are two Latin Labs each week. You are welcome to come by my office in Budagher Hall
anytime.
