Weekly Newsletter for the week of April 12th- April 16th Here’s what we did: This week we in Science documented our plant growth, controls and variables. Some students returned from break to find a big growth, some, not so much! But, just like each student, plants grow at their own rate as well. This week in Math we began lesson 10 for the 4th graders and study links for lesson 9 for the 5th graders. 5th grade will have their lesson 9 math test on Wednesday, April 21st while the 4th graders will have their next unit math test Thursday, May 6th. Final math tests for the year will be Thursday, May 27th. The fifth graders will actually finish their books, the fourth graders will fall one short! This week in Reading we focused structure: practicing middle school level Study Island and working in Daybooks. While we have been preparing for tests all year, a little bit more preparation can’t hurt! Students should also have an independent reading book in class. Upon completing their chosen book, they will create a project to demonstrate their understanding/enjoyment of the book. These will be due in early May. And last but not least, this week in Social Studies we are branching into governments. To tie the immigration unit into World War One, the students will first briefly study governments and then create their own country. However, not to create a heavy load during these stressful testing weeks, World War One will not start (!) until May. Students should be logging in to Study Island at least once a week at home. In the weeks leading up to the OATs, we will use Study Island in the classroom, but for now, please dedicate some time to individual Study Island time at home. Assignments are posted on the Study Island website. The Invention Convention has also been EXTENDED!!! At-home projects are no longer due this Thursday. More information to come! Here’s what’s coming up: Science: Plants, experiments Math: Lesson 9/10, Preparation for OATs Reading: Study Island, Daybooks, Independent reading book, The Hobbit (May) Social Studies: Government, Create-a-Country, World War One (May) Important Information: ***OATs will begin the week of April 19th. *** In order to prepare for these tests, we will begin using Study Island. I would like to give a big thank you to Ms. Henahan for coming in on Thursdays to work on writing the news with our class. http://lakewoodcityschools.org/olcClassView.aspx?classID=1094 Also, please check the website for homework, assignments and resources. The school day does not always go as planned, so the daily work may not always be accurate, but the website is still a great tool to gauge what is happening in the classroom.
