 Record in Agenda: No HW  (unless you owe me any late work!)
 *If your class has not completed the America Before Columbus video,
we will do so next class
 You need your notebook, pen/pencil, colored pencils, & glue sticks
today
 Turn to the next page in your notebook, title it America Before
Columbus (we will staple in your video notes here AFTER we complete
the video & you get a grade on the notes)
 Then, turn to the NEXT page after that in your notebook and title it
Native American Cultural Regions
 Today, we’ll be working on answering this
question:
What adaptations did Native Americans make in order
to survive in their environments?
But first, some vocabulary review…
 All of the physical surroundings in a place, including
land, water, animals, plants, and climate.
 Useful materials found in nature, including water,
vegetation, animals, and minerals.
 A slow change over time in individual and social
activity (food, clothing, shelter, language) due to
environmental conditions.
 A people’s way of life, including beliefs, customs, food,
dwellings, tools, and clothing.
 An area in which a group of people share a similar
culture and language.
 Because there are hundreds of different Native American
tribes, it is impossible to study all of them
 Therefore, historians use Cultural Regions as a way to study
the Native Americans that lived in the Americas before
Columbus “discovered” the New World
 Although there may be many different tribes in a Cultural
Region, the tribes tended to adapt to their environment in
similar ways (for example: the Cherokee, Chickasaw, &
Seminole are all tribes in the Southeast Cultural Region)
 You need at least ½ page for the map… turn to your
next clean page in your notebook if necessary
 Title your map Native American Cultural Regions
Map
 You will need to sketch the map that appears on the
next slide. You will need to shade and label the 8
Native American Cultural Regions that we will study.
 Together as a class, we will read & take notes on the
Northwest Coast
 Glue in the notes graphic organizer in your notebook
 You may choose to work in a pair or on your own
 You will need to re-create the notes page in your
notebook for the other cultural regions– make your
notebook page look like the notes graphic organizer
 Get a folder for another Cultural Region from the
teacher & complete the notes
 Get your notes & artifacts checked by the teacher
before moving on to the next Cultural Region
