After World War I, many Americans became suspicious of foreigners. As a result, a fear of communism spread and immigration to the U.S. was limited. From 1919-1921, there was a fear of Communism and anarchy caused by: • Russian Revolution • Massive strikes by workers after WWI The government rounded up thousands of immigrants suspected of being communist or anarchist Sacco and Vanzetti were Italian immigrants arrested and convicted of murder in the early 1920s Some believed they were found guilty of being immigrants The Klan emerged in the 1920s not only in the South, but many parts of the country Hate group that discriminated against blacks, Catholics, immigrants (anyone not White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant) Millions of members joined the KKK in the 1920s Part of fear against immigrants The 1920s saw limits put on immigration that lasted into the 1960s National Origins Act (1924) Created quotas (limits) on how many immigrants could come to the U.S. each year
