The electron transport chain pumps what kind of ions into the intermembrane space? a. H+ = hydrogen ions or protons 2. How many ATP are produced by the complete breakdown of one glucose molecule? a. 38 3. In Glycolysis, list the kinds of high-energy molecules are produced and tell how many. a. NADH (2) and ATP (4 = total, 2 = net) 4. Glycolysis depends on a continuous supply of what molecule? a. Glucose 5. Which of the following can occur without oxygen: glycolysis, krebs cycle or the electron transport chain? a. glycolysis 6. What step produces the most ATP? a. Electron transport chain 7. Write out the chemical formula for respiration (it must be balanced) a. 8. What is the purpose of mitochondria? a. The mitochondria are the POWERHOUSE of the cell. They perform cellular respiration which creates energy through the breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen. Photosynthesis Review Questions 7. http://www.hobart.k12.in.us/jkousen/Biology/phobig.html a. This great website is a great read over… ignore the information that we did not cover in class. 8. Where specifically does photosynthesis take place?? Be as specific as possible. a. In the thylakoid membrane, inside a thylakoid, which is in stacks of grana, located in the chloroplast of the plant cell. 9. Write the chemical formula for photosynthesis a. Reverse of Respiration 10. An organic compound formed is the dark reactions of photosynthesis is = PGAL (A) A)PGAL B) chlorophyll D) water C) oxygen 11. Why can’t we humans perform photosynthesis? a. We don’t have chloroplasts 12. What proteins absorb light energy in the light reactions? a. PS 1 and 2 Questions that apply to BOTH: 9. What purpose do the electrons serve in the electron transport chain? a. They provide the energy to pump H+ ions across the membranes 10. What protein is in charge of the creation of ATP? a. ATP synthase 11. Why is the H+ gradient important? a. It is important because once it is establish, there is a higher concentration on one side of the membrane than on the other. Thus the atoms want to move from a high to low concentration. So the protons will flow freely from the high concentration to the low concentration through ATP synthase. ATP synthase turns as protons move through it and create ATP from ADP and Pi (inorganic phosphate)
