8th ELA Assignments for Tues 9/23 through Thurs 9/25
Over the next three days, here is the work you have to complete. Work at your own pace. All work is
due at the start of the hour on Friday 9/26. Please hang on to all work (do not turn into basket) as
we will be discussing it in class on Friday. There are digital copies of all assignments, stories,
and questions on my website.
1. Read “The Monkey’s Paw” on p 91-101 in the RED literature book. There is also a digital copy
on my website. You may read with a partner if you like.
2. On notebook paper, answer questions 1-4 and 9-11 on page 102. Be sure to write in complete
sentences and echo back in your responses. Use specific details from the story for support.
You may discuss these questions with a partner but you must write your own individual
responses.
3. Complete a plot diagram for “The Monkey’s Paw”. You may work with a partner on this but
each person must complete their OWN diagram.
4. On the back of your plot diagram, write a paragraph on what you feel is the theme of “The
Monkey’s Paw.” Use a clear topic sentence, specific supporting details, and a concluding
statement. Be sure to specifically explain how you think the STORY teaches that theme.
Point to specific examples from the story to explain your thoughts. (6-8 quality sentences) This
paragraph should be written on your own.
5. Read “The Open Window” on p156-160. Complete the Characterization Chart as you read.
You may read this story with a partner. Each person must complete their own chart.
6. On the back of the chart write summary of this story (6-8 quality sentences) AND answer
questions 2-4 on p161. Use complete sentences and echo back in your response. Use details
from the story for support. You may discuss these questions with a partner but you must write
your own individual responses.
If any of the above work is not done by the end of the hour on Thurs 9/25, it is homework and
expected to be completed at the start of the hour on Friday 9/26. All assignments, stories, and
handouts are on my website. If you need to check a book out please be sure the substitute
writes down your book number.
