GT Scope and Sequence Skills Continuum Grade 8 Pre-AP U.S. History The Grade 8 Pre-AP U.S. History gifted student will be provided opportunities to: • CREATIVE THINKING • Describe the various approaches used by U.S. historical figures during crisis or conflict Apply the CPS process to evaluate the effectiveness of a solution to a problem from U.S. history • CRITICAL THINKING • Use guiding questions to select meaningful topics from U.S. history and research the topic from multiple perspectives Evaluate primary and secondary historical sources for validity and credibility for use in writing a position paper Present information from individual inquiry to an expert audience in the field Demonstrate coherence in oral expression through uniting and organizing multiple facts, opinions, and perspectives • • • • RESEARCH COMMUNICATION • • Critically analyze the role of the US media throughout history as it relates to US perceptions of global issues Select and use appropriate tools or processes to clarify and justify points of view on historical issues Examine and evaluate systems of government and political thought as related to the formation of the U.S. Investigate how cultural groups have been affected by U.S. laws, policies, and practices over time Compare and contrast empirical research studies on topics from U.S. history retrieved from complex databases Compare historical and descriptive research reports on U.S. historical events or figures Advanced Academic Services Austin Independent School District Updated 7/21/2011
