If you are a healthcare professional you can include your healthcare training certificate instead of the high school diploma or other equivalent education credentials. PROOF OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Participants must be bilingual in English and Spanish and proof of proficiency in both languages a requirement needed to enroll in the course. Language proficiency must be met by first taking the VCI initial oral and written assessment or meet requirements listed in numbers 2 or 3 1. Complete the VCI initial oral and written language assessments. a. 2. The VCI initial language oral and written assessment grade must be 3 points or higher. If needed, a second assessment will be scheduled with a third party language evaluation service, Alta Language Services, to further explore applicant’s language competency. 5 or more years of verified professional experience working in the language service industry 3. State or federal court interpreter certification REGISTRATION, ASSESSMENT, CANCELLATION & CERTIFICATION POLICIES 1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older. Applicant must be fluent in English and Spanish. 2. To register for a course, applicant must submit the completed Application Form to VCI in one of the following ways: Email to director@vcinm.org or mail to PO Box 12572, Albuquerque NM 87195. All registration forms are accepted on a first come, first served basis. 3. A mandatory language proficiency assessment (LPA) is required to assess each applicant’s language skills as described in the Proof of Language Proficiency in this document 4. Payment of full $450.00 + $30 NM Gross Receipt Tax must be included with the completed registration form- TOTAL REGISTRATION FEE $480.00 (including $100 non-refundable LPA fee) must be submitted at time of registration. 5. Upon completion of the LPA, applicant will be notified results by email to confirm participation in the program. 6. Cancellations accepted up to 7 days prior to course start date for a tuition refund of $350 (language proficiency assessment fee is non-refundable). If cancellation is received within 5 days of course start date, student will receive a credit for a future course date. All cancellation notices must be received in writing by mail to PO Box 12572, Albuquerque, NM 87195 or email to director@vcinm.org . 7. Students must attend all 40 hours of the training and pass the Post Test in order to earn a certificate of successful completion. This certificate can be used as proof of training for national certification. It is used to train novice and experienced medical interpreters, and it is accepted by both accredited national certifying bodies. No interpreting experience is required in order to take the class but you must be bilingual. CURRENTLY VCI IS OFFERING THIS TRAINING PROGRAM TO ENGLISH/SPANISH BILINGUAL SPEAKERS This course covers: Basic interpreting skills. Roles, ethics, conduit and clarifier interpreting, managing the flow of the session. Codes of ethics. Codes of ethics and decision-making for interpreters in health care. Integrated medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Introduction to common terms, procedures, and specialties relating to human physiology and health. Information on health care systems. Introduction to the health care systems and types of health care providers. Culture in interpreting. Self-awareness, basic characteristics of specific cultures, traditional health care in specific communities, culture brokering. Communication skills for advocacy. Professional development. Effective communication, professional conduct, self-care, resources for professional growth.
