Brief Description:
This course provides introductory level in computer systems and information technology for second-term
preparation year. It gives the necessary overview concepts of computer system hardware (input and output
devices), internet, processing and storing data, operating systems, networks and application software.
Teaching Methodology: Active Learning using Multimedia presentation, Whiteboard etc.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this course the students will be able to:

Summarize the historical development of information processing and describe its impact on main parts of
computer systems.

Identify common uses of computers in business and other sectors of society.

Identify common hardware components of a personal computer systems and describe their uses.( input,
output, storage devices, processors and computer categories)

Describe the characteristics of computer operating systems.

Describe disk and drive contents.

Explain how to measure and improve the overall computer system performance.

Identify the binary equivalent of decimal numbers and other features of common computer codes.

Describe how different printers work to create printed images and text pages.

Understand information processing and data storing file system.

Define networks and differentiate between Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).

List various network services.

Explain fundamental data communication and network concepts.

Define and identify common uses of the Internet.

Describe procedures and requirements for connecting to the Internet.

Identify several widely used programming languages and describe the strengths and weaknesses of each.

List software to complete common business operations and transactions. (XII)

Understand and use application and system software (MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS-Power Point).
Student will be expected to demonstrate their learning by

Solving the suggested home works and assignments, lab exercises and activities, creating and submitting
lab reports, answering written exams and quizzes, presenting work to audience.

Student Responsibilities:
Home works, Assignments & Lab-work:
 Register in the moodle server for online activities (http://www.jcc.edu.sa/moodle)
 Home works and assignments are individual unless mentioned by the instructor otherwise
 Lab activities will be assigned individually or in group. If any lab is missed the student is responsible to arrange
for a make up.
 The devices in the Lab must not be used for any other activities and/or in any other ways than that which is
explained by the instructor
 Each week’s home works, assignments or Lab reports are due on the first event of the next week and must be
submitted in the suggested format
 Late assignments will be penalized as follows: one day late...1 grade reduction, two days late...two grades
reduced, after three days...1/2 credit.
 If a student submits more than two late assignments in a term, additional late papers may not be accepted and
extra work might be assigned
Attendance:

NO ABSENCE AND NO LATE WILL UPGRADE ALL PASSED MARKS TO THE NEXT GRADE.

Registration to a course and dropping procedure is a student’s responsibility

The proof of registration should be shown in the first class

The students are expected to be in class from the beginning of class.

Those who come in the class within 10 minutes are considered LATE

After ten (10) minutes the students are marked absent

After three weeks equivalent absence, a grade of “DN” (Denied) will be issued

It's responsibility of the student to keep the record of his absences.

Electronic devices must be turned off during all class and Lab times. Otherwise he may be asked to
leave class and earn an absence.
