Introduction and Acknowledgements:
The euroball project is focused on the creation of an original game, ‘Euroball’ by
the participant schools leading to an inter-school supernational event. During the
course of the project various materials were created by the children and key
objectives in social, personal and health education will be addressed. One of the
key resources created was this sports manual which created by the partner
schools and utilised to create awareness of partner countries in addition to
being an important resource for the inter-school event.
The partner schools are very grateful to ‘Comenius, The Education and Culture
Lifelong learning programme’ for their funding of the project and the respective
national agencies in each partner country. Special heartfelt thanks are extended
to the students, staff and school communities in each partner school.

1. Fatih Ortaokulu Bartın, Turkey
Officially REPUBLIC OF TURKEY, in Turkish, TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ, is a
country that occupies a unique geographic position, lying partly in Asia and partly
in Europe. Through its history it has acted as both a barrier and a bridge
between the two continents. Turkey is among the larger countries of the Middle
East, in terms of territory and population, and its land area of 300,948 square
miles (779,452 square kilometres) is greater than that of any European state.
Nearly all of the country is in Asia, comprising the oblong peninsula of Asia
Minor, known also as Anatolia (Anadolu). The remainder--Turkish Thrace
(Trakya)--lies in the extreme southeastern part of Europe, a tiny remnant of an
empire that once extended over much of the Balkans.
Bartın is the provincial capital of Turkey's Bartın Province.
Formerly a district of Zonguldak Province, Bartın has been made into a province
seat in 1991 with the constitution of Bartın Province composed of 4 districts
(the central Bartın district and 3 depending districts). The city is situated 14
kilometers inland on the Bartın River (Bartın Çayı) which is navigable for vessels
between the city and the Black Sea coast.
5
Bartın is one of the centers in Turkey's Black Sea region that is becoming
increasingly attractive for tourists. With its rich architectural heritage, Bartın
is 80 kilometers east of Zonguldak is on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, the calm
city of timbered houses. It's one of the newest provinces of Turkey. The
history of the city dates back to 1200 BC, when Gasgas tribe inhabited in the
environs. In the following years, the region had entered under the dominance of
Hittites, Frigs, Kringens, Kokons , Enets, Kimmers, Lydians, Persians and
Macedonians.
The historic progress of Bartin continues with the dominance of Roman Empire
and Byzantine Empire and later with the dominance of Turkish Seljuks and
Candarogullari State between 11th - 13th centuries AD. Bartin was conquered by
the Ottoman sultan Yıldırım Bayezit in 1392.
The wooden Bartin houses display the architectural characteristics of the art
movements after the Tanzimat Fermani (Reforms Decree). Temperate Black Sea
naval climate is experienced in Bartin. Summer seasons are hot while winter
seasons are chilly, and lots of rain of course which gives all of its green
vegetation of the region.
The Bartin River passing through the city gives way to boat trips in the city to
catch a glimpse of perfect landscape.
Our school is the biggest public school in Bartin with 43 teachers and 733
students, aged between 6 and 14 years. It is located in the centre of Bartin
which is283 km far away from Ankara, the capital city of Turkey.
Our school focuses on the promotion of friendship, tolerance, empathy and the
development of each person as a unique individual. The needs of the pupils,
teachers and parents alike are catered for in our school. Cognitive skills and the
students’ motivation are important to us.

2. Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín, Dublin, Ireland
Ireland/ Éire is an island to the northwest of continental Europe. It is the
third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island on Earth.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, which covers fivesixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which covers the remaining area and
is located in the north-east of the island. The population of Ireland is
approximately 6.4 million. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland
and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland. Dublin is the capital city of the
Republic of Ireland and the largest city on the island.
Balbriggan is a town with a rich and long history. People have lived in Balbriggan
since Ireland was first inhabitated. Originally, Balbriggan was but a small
fishing village, which was part of the bigger Baroney of Balrothery. Balrothery
was the main Parish in the area, boasting a population of 250, compared to just
30 in Balbriggan at the time. In the Census of 1911, it was clear that Balrothery
was still the main area, however, by 1936, Balbriggan had grown and had become
the parish of the area. This shows the growth in population and the shift in the
economic culture of the town. The main emphasis in Balbriggan had been fishing,
however cotton and other such industries began to take hold.
Balbriggan is now an urban, vibrant town, on the outskirts of Dublin. It is
situated in North County Dublin, not far from Dublin Airport. Balbriggan while
orignally a small, rural town, since the Celtic Tiger, has experienced a massive
population explosion and has become one of the most rapidly developing towns in
the country.
Balbriggan is very well serviced and can be reached by many modes of transport
– it is situated on the M1 – the motorway which links the North and South,
Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Irish Rail and a range of private bus companies service
the town daily, which facilitates many families commuting to work in the city.
Due to the population explosion in Balbriggan, there has been a huge increase in
the amount of schools in the area. Our school opened in 2006. Since 2005, 4
7
large primary schools have opened – one on a emergency basis. Each caters for
in excess of 350/400 students. Our school caters for 400 at present, but will
cater for 480 in the next 2 years. Another school developed from a small school
of less than 100 students to a school for 450 students during this time. At
secondary level, both of the existing schools have grown (doubled in size), while
a third school has opened, which caters for 1000 students. Another second level
school, which will operate through the medium of Irish, is due to open in
September 2014 and will serve 700 students, while there are plans being made
for yet another to open in the coming years. This shows the level of growth in
the town.
Our school was founded in 2006 by a group of parents and Irish Language
enthusiasts. This school opened due the dedication of this group and it has
grown beyond all recognition in the last few years. The doors opened with 2
teachers and 35 students in September 2006 and now has 20 teachers with 400
students. The school has many interests and we encourage our students to get
involved in as many as possible – ranging from sport – hurling, football, running,
Euroball, Our Active Flag, to environmental awareness – applying for our Green
Flag, creating and maintaining our garden, music – Choirs and musical
instruments, leadership and responsibility through our Students’ Council, Drama
competitions, fundraising, Debating, Chess and many more. We strive to
encourage children to become involved and develop interests in many areas so as
they can become more active members in our society.
Our whole school community has enjoyed and learned so much from our
involvement in the Euroball project to date and are extremely excited about the
upcoming visit from our Comenius partners. It was with great pride that we
were able to bring our students to Croatia and we cannot wait to repay the
kindness shown to us on the trip when all of our partners bring their students to
Ireland.

3. Doctor Peter Beron Secondary School, Bulgaria
Bulgaria is located in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the
north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and
the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres ,
Bulgaria is Europe's 14th-largest country.
Human activity in the lands of modern Bulgaria can be traced back to the
Paleolithic. In the 7th century, a peace treaty with Byzantium in 681 and the
establishment of a permanent capital at Pliska south of the Danube marked the
beginning of the First Bulgarian Empire. The Bulgars gradually mixed up with the
local population, adopting a common language on the basis of Slavonic.
In 864 Boris I abolished paganism in favour of Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
Simeon the Great's 34-year rule began in 893 and saw the largest territorial
expansion of Bulgaria, along with a golden age of Bulgarian culture.
The population of 7.36 million people is predominantly urban and mainly
concentrated in the administrative centres of its 28 provinces. Most commercial
and cultural activities are concentrated in the capital Sofia. The strongest
sectors of the economy are heavy industry, power engineering, and agriculture,
all relying on local natural resources.
The current political structure dates to the adoption of a democratic
constitution in 1991.
Pernik is a city in western Bulgaria (about 20 kilometres southwest of Sofia) with a population of 80,191. It is the main city of
Pernik Province and lies on both banks of the Struma River in the Pernik Valley
between the Viskyar, Vitosha and Golo Bardo mountains.
Originally the site of a Thracian fortress founded in the 4th century BC, and
later a Roman settlement, Pernik became part of the Bulgarian Empire in the
early 9th century as an important fortress. The medieval town was a key
Bulgarian stronghold during Bulgarian tsar Samuil's wars against the Byzantine
9
Empire in the 11th century, when it was governed by the local noble Krakra of
Pernik, withstanding Byzantine sieges a number of times.
In the 20th century Pernik developed rapidly as a centre for coal mining and
heavy industry. The Surva International Festival of the Masquerade Games is
held in the city every January.
Our school was established on the 01-09-1983 as the first language school in
the territory of Penrik .English Russian and German are the foreign languages
studied. In the 1986 the school moved to a separate building – that of the first
comprehensive school in Pernik. In September 1991, the statute of the school,
as one teaching Russian as a first foreign language, was changed in accordance
with the new curriculum. In 1992/1993 students started learning English as a
first foreign language from first grade. Now there are nearly 800 students
from the first to twelve grade.

4. CEIP José Lloret Talens, Spain
Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain is a sovereign state and a member state
of the European Union. It is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern
Europe. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean
Sea, to the north and north east by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and
to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.
Modern humans first arrived in the Iberian peninsula around 35,000 years ago.
It came under Roman rule around 200 BCE, after which the region was named
Hispania. In the Middle Ages it was conquered by Germanic tribes and later by
the Moors to the south. Spain emerged as a unified country in the 15th century,
following the marriage of the Catholic Monarchs and the completion of the
centuries-long reconquest, or Reconquista, of the peninsula from the Moors in
1492. Spain became an influential global empire in the early modern period, being
one of the first countries to colonize the New World and leaving a legacy of
over 500 million Spanish speakers today, making it the world's second most
spoken first language.
Our school is located in Almansa, in the southeast of Spain, in the province of
Albacete, part of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha. The town of
Almansa is known for its spectacular castle, built on top of the great boulder
that crowns the city and defines the tangle of alleyways that comprise the old
quarter.
Besides its castle, Almansa is also known for its Moors and Christians Festival
celebrated from the 1st to the 6th of May, and for the famous Battle of
Almansa. The Battle of Almansa was fought on April 25, 1707, as part of the
War of the Spanish Succession between Philippe of Anjou (the Bourbonic
armies) and Archduke Charles of Austria (the Habsburg armies). The Bourbonic
armies achieved a decisive victory, allowing for Philip V's accession to the
Spanish throne.
11
The Sierra del Mugrón is located within the Almansa limits. 8 km from the town
is the reservoir of Almansa, built in 1584. This reservoir is the oldest one in
Europe. 12 km from the town is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Belen (17th
century).
Our school has around 260 students, starting from 3 years old up to 12. Our
staff, 20 teachers, counts on a wide range of specialists, who have experience in
several projects. In 2011, the school finished a Comenius multilateral association
with Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Belgium, called “Fit as a fiddle” that focused
on active life and healthy food. Others projects that are or have been carried
out are related to areas like plans to promote reading or new models in the
teaching of Physical Education, with the collaboration of University of CastillaLa Mancha.

After Celts, Romans, Huns, Slavs had lived in the Carpathian Basin, in the 9th
century the Hungarians led by grand prince Árpád settled in.
Saint Stephen I became the first king in 1000 AD. He got a crown from the
Pope Sylvester II. Stephen I integrated Hungary into the Christian Western
Europe. From 15th century Hungary had to fight against the Ottoman Turks.
The kingdom of Hungary was independent till 1541 when it became the part of
Ottoman Empire. The middle part of the country was called Pashalik of Buda.
Suleiman II tried to occupy the whole country several times however, in vain.
After 1699 Hungary was integrated into the Habsburg Monarchy till 1918. The
Hungarian fought for their independence led by Ferenc Rákóczi II
13
(our school was named after him) between 1703and 1711 and Lajos Kossuth in
1848-1849.
In 1989 Hungary became independent republic. In 2004 our country joined the
European Union.
Kecskemét is in the central part of Hungary. It is the 8th largest city in the
country, and the county seat of Bács-Kiskun.

6. Osnovna škola Gradac, Croatia
The area known as Croatia today was inhabited throughout the prehistoric
period. Later, the region was settled by Liburnians and Illyrians, while the
first Greek colonies were established on the islands of Korčula, Hvar and Vis,
and finally became part of the Roman Empire. This period ends
with Avar and Croat invasions in the first half of the 7th century. In Medieval
Age this territory was ruled by Croatian rulers.
The Venetians gained control over most of Dalmatia by 15th century, with the
exception of the city-state of Dubrovnik which became independent. In 16th
century the House of Habsburg was chosen as a new ruler of Croatia, under the
condition that it provides protection to Croatia against the Ottoman Empire
while respecting its political rights. In the first half of the 19th century
the Croatian National Revival, a political and cultural campaign, was advocating
the unity of all South Slavs in the empire. By the Croatian–Hungarian
Settlement of 1868, kingdoms of Croatia and Slavonia were united while the
Kingdom of Dalmatia remained under de facto Austrian control.
In 1918 the Croatian Sabor declared independence and decided to join the newly
formed State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which entered into union with
the Kingdom of Serbia. The new country was later named Yugoslavia. After
the World War II, Croatia became a Socialist federal unit of the SFR
Yugoslavia, but enjoying a degree of autonomy within the
15
federation. Croatia declared independence in June 1991. Croatian War of
Independence effectively ended in 1995 with a decisive victory by Croatia.
One of the most famous global cultural contribution from Croatia is the necktie,
derived from the cravat originally worn by the 17th-century Croatian
mercenaries in France.
The Croatian Adriatic coast is one of the most indented in the world: it has 1246
islands and islets with a total coastline of 4058 km, the total length of the
mainland coast being 1777 km.
The Dalmatian dog got its name from the region of Dalmatia.
Municipality Gradac is located in the
southernmost part of Split-Dalmatian
County, between Split and Dubrovnik. It
includes five small towns: Drvenik,
Zaostrog, Podaca, Brist and Gradac which
is administrative hub of municipality. The
main source of income is tourism. Under its
current name, Gradac is mentioned for the
first time in 17th century. It owes its name
to a fortress that once stood on a high
ground above today’s church of St. Michael.
Our school consists of one main school which is located in Gradac and three
smaller schools which are located in Drvenik, Zaostrog and Brist. Our 154
students range in age from 6-14 and we have 31 teachers on staff and 11 more
employees who are mostly support staff. In addition to the regular curriculum,
our school offer three optional subjects: German, Informatics and Religion as
well as some extracurriculum activities and the school cooperative.
Students of our school successfully participate in the municipal, regional and
state competitions. They have been particularly successful in the area of
technical education, mathematics, computer science, geography and football.
Our projects were presented at various professional conferences like Days of
Primary Schools in Split-Dalmatian County, Mental Health Europe Conference
2012 and the latest one "Active Citizen: Little Places in My Heart" was
presented at the Croatian state conference of projects in the field of civic
education in 2013.
Last year we successfully ended the two-year project "For safe and supportive
environment in schools," which was conducted in collaboration with UNICEF.
Our staff conducted numerous researches and published articles in professional
journals on topics related to educational issues.

7. Gaelscoil Riabhach, Galway, Ireland
Galway is situated on the west
coast of Ireland. Irish (Gaelic/ Gaeilge) was the predominant language of almost
all of Ireland for most of its recorded history, only being replaced by English
during the course of the nineteenth century. Today English is the predominant
spoken language of the country.
The picturesque town of Loughrea is located in east County Galway,
approximately 30km southeast of Galway City. Situated along the northern
shore of Lough Rea, the thriving ‘town of the grey lake’, has a rich medieval
history, and is regarded to date back to the 13th century, when the AngloNorman, Richard de Burgo, is reputed to have built Loughrea Castle. The town
lies north of a range of wooded hills, the Slieve Aughty Mountains. The town is
also famous for its beautiful cathedral which dominates the town's skyline. In
the course of the 1600s the Catholic bishop based in Loughrea fled across
Europe due to the oppression of the Roman Catholic religion by the English
government. He lived the remainder of his life in the town of Gyór, Hungary,
where the story of his life is still commemorated.
17
The site of the Battle of Aughrim is situated to the east of the town. This
battle was the decisive battle of the Williamite Wars in the 1690s. Soliders
from these wars went on to fight in other battles across Europe including the
Battle of Almonsa in Spain.
Our school was founded in 2000 by a group of parents who wished their children
to be educated through the medium of the Irish language (Gaelic). At present
the school is located in temporary accommodation and it is planned to progress
to a permanent building in the course of 2016.

Euroball Rules:
The aim of a game of Euroball is to score points by throwing the ball into a
box, located in the opposition's goal circle. Points are only scored if the ball
is hit from outside the circle. The player scoring must make contact with a
passed ball and cannot enter the circle, even after hitting the ball. The
team with the highest number of points at the end of the game is the
winner.
The ball used is the same as an Olympic handball: 50 – 52cm circumference.
The ball moves from player to player through passing. The ball may not be
picked from the ground. Players cannot travel with the ball in their hands.
There are a number of different passes:
1. Under arm pass: the ball is thrown from one hand and hit by the
other hand (as in gaelic football)
2. Over arm pass: the ball is thrown by one hand and hit by the other
(as in volleyball)
3. Kick: the ball is kicked from the ground (as in soccer). Players may
travel with the ball at their feet, as in soccer.
4. Head
Defensive players cannot obstruct the opposition player with the ball – no
contact. The ball can be intercepted as it is passing from one player to
another. When a player catches the ball it is a ‘mark’ and all other players
must move back one metre. If a player catches the ball it cannot be
dropped to feet. It must be passed to another player. However, it can be
19
blocked by the chest, dropping to feet. At any time any part of the body
can be used to block the ball.
Scoring: the player who scores must make contact with a passing ball. The
ball cannot be caught. Instead it must be struck (over-arm, under-arm,
kick or by the head) into the box in the centre of the circle.
The court is divided into halves with a scoring circle (circle of basketball
court, c 3.5m diameter). A box (washing machine box dimesion) is in the
middle of the circle. No players are allowed to enter the circle. If the ball
falls into the circle it may only be retrieved by feet, like soccer.
There are six players on each team, and each must wear a "bib" showing
their country’s colour. Two substitutes are allowed on the sideline. There
are no limit to the number of substitutions but at least three boys and
three girls must be on the court at all times. Game is played for twenty
minutes, two halves of ten minutes, with a two minute break. Each team can
call two time-outs during the game.
Each half starts with a tip-off like soccer. The teams flip a coin to decide
the first tip-off. Players start each half on their own half of the court.
There is no off-side rule. If one team sends the ball outside the court the
opposition gets a line ball, which is a free pass from the hands.
The referee can call a time-out for injury. This time will be added at the
end of each half. Any fouls committed – contact which affects the game
flow or incorrect passing will result in a free ‘marked’ pass. No system of
red/yellow card.

Fair Play Song
Let's come together
Cheer up our teams!
We are a bunch of
playful, happy kids.
Learning and playing
That is what we do
We have more fun
acting as a crew.
And now we found a new exciting
game…
Euroball, Euroball…
This is a brand new game we play.
Come and play with us today.
Kick, kick, kick the ball
and try it's not so hard at all.
Euroball, Euroball...
This is a brand new game we play.
Come and play with us today.
Kick, kick, kick the ball
and try it's not so hard at all.
Rap:
I am from Hungary,
I am from Turkey,
We are from Ireland,
And I am from Spain,
I am from Bulgaria,
I am from Croatia.
We are from
all around Europe
Our dreams are same:
Friendship,
Love,
having fun,
our dreams
to live in peace.
Let's have a contest
On the sportfields.
Whoever wins
We are friends still.
Learning and playing
That is what we do
We have more fun
acting as a crew.
