Where does electricity come from?
Electricity comes from a power station in
Larne called Ballylumford.
It travels along long cables on big pylons.
Then it reaches a smaller factory which
transforms it into 132,000 volts.
It keeps doing so until it reaches your
home, school or work.
Production of electricity.
The effects on the environment
Power stations use oil and coal or gas which pollutes the
air.
But some types of electricity do not pollute the air
Renewable energy like
Windmills
Solar panels
Hydroelectricity
Nuclear is very clean too but it is very dangerous.
Different types of energy
Electricity can be changed into lots of
different types of energy.
Sound
Movement
Light
Heat
How to make a circuit
You need 2 or 3 wires/1or 2 batteries/1
bulb.
You put the wires on each side of the
battery and then clip them on the bulb
handle .You have now made a circuit.
To make a bulb brighter you need to put
more batteries in the circuit.
Conductors and insulators.
Conductors
Metal spoon
Kitchen foil
Metal bracelet
Metal badge
Anything which is metal
is a conductor.
This means electricity
can go through it.
Insulators
Plastic pen lid
Cloth
Paper
Pen
An insulator is
something which
does not let electricity
through.
