Terms to Know
1. Career: Series of related jobs built on a foundation of interest, knowledge, training, & experience
2. Job: Work done for pay
3. Lifestyle Goals: The way a person wants to spend his or her time, energy, and resources in the future
4. Values: Principles a person wants to live by and the beliefs that are important to that person
5. Data: Information, knowledge, ideas, facts, words, symbols, figures, statistics
6. Aptitude: A person’s potential for learning a certain skill
7. Ability: A skill a person has already developed
8. Personality: The combination of an individual’s attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics
9. Self-Concept: The way one sees oneself
10. Learning Style: Different ways people naturally think and learn
11. Career Clusters: 16 different industries to pursue a career
12. Working Conditions: Social and physical surroundings of a job
13. Salary: Fixed amount of pay for a certain period of time, usually a month or a year
14. Job Outlook: The demand for particular jobs
15. Hourly Wage: Pay that is based on a fixed rate for each hour worked
16. Apprentice: Someone who learns how to do a jo b through hands-on experience under the guidance
of a skilled worker
17. On-the-job Training: On-site instruction on how to perform a job
18. Technical Center: A school that offers a variety of skills-orientated programs (i.e. DeVry)
19. Trade School: A privately run school that trains students for particular types of jobs (i.e. Electricians)
20. Self-Assessment: Evaluation of oneself related to personality, careers, leadership etc.
21. Cover Letter: Demonstrates your passion and enthusiasm for the position you seek; showcases your
skills; requests interview
22. Education: Formal training thru an accredited institution
23. Experience: Work or volunteer related responsibilities stated as results
24. Resume: Brief summary of a job seeker’s personal information, education, skills, work/volunteer
experience organized by chronological, functional/skill, or a combination of both
25. Objective: Seeking full-time Customer Service position with Best Buy.
ab. Accomplishments: A display of achievements that go above and beyond basic expectations
ac. Summary of Qualifications: A highlight of job-related, transferable, and adaptive skills
26. FAFSA -Free application for financial student aid
27. Stafford Loan-A federal loan that is either subsidized or unsubsidized
28. Subsidized Loan-the government pays the interest on the loan while you’re in school
29. Scholarship-Financial aid that is earned through academics or athletics
30. Perkins Loan-A subsidized loan, with the interest being paid by the federal government during the inschool and 9-month grace periods. There are no origination or default fees, and the interest rate is
5%. There is a 10-year repayment period.

36. Tuition-Price paid to receive specific educational training
37. Fees-Money associated with educational training
38. Undergraduate-A person with a high school diploma working toward a Bachelor’s Degree
39. Graduate-A person with a Bachelor’s Degree working toward a Master’s Degree
