Even reputable sites often have spyware/malware/adware attached to their sites. Phishing Phishing: The goal of a phishing scam is to steal your valuable personal data, such as credit card numbers, passwords, account data, and other information. The con artists who design phishing scams send out millions of fraudulent e-mail messages that appear to come from organizations you know and trust, like your bank, credit card company, or school. The e-mail will direct you to provide personal information such as your bank account number or social security number. The bogus emails often include links to authentic-looking Web sites that have logos taken directly from legitimate Web sites. If you think you've received a phishing e-mail message, do not respond to it. Pharming Pharming: Basically, pharming involves manipulating the name resolution process on the Internet. When a user enters an address , such as www.psu.edu, the DNS servers convert this to the numeric IP address for the website – name resolution. Pharming consists of modifying the name resolution system, so that when a user thinks he or she is accessing to bank's Web page, he or she is actually accessing the IP of a spoofed site where phishing or worse can take place. Data Backup Backup your data on a regular basis. Data recovery can be very costly and does not always work. You can back up to external drives or CD/DVD if you have a burner. There are pay for services available on the web that maintain backups for your data.
