NELSON MANDELA 1918 - 2013 2-r r) At school, Mandela was given the name ‘Nelson’ by his first teacher. 3–f f) Mandela’s father died and he went to live with his uncle (Chief Jongintaba). 4–v v) Mandela was sent to study at the University College of Fort Hare by Chief Jongintaba. 5–b b) Mandela and his cousin sold two of Chief Jongintaba’s cows and ran away to Johannesburg. 6–m m) Mandela started to study law in the evenings. 7–p p) Mandela finished his studies and became a lawyer. 8–h h) The Defiance Campaign was organised against unfair laws. 9–q q) Mandela was asked by the ANC to organise the MK to use violence against the government. 10 – w w) At the Rivonia Trial, Mandela was accused of sabotage. 11 – s s) Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. Therefore, he was taken to Robben Island. 12 – c c) Mandela secretly wrote his life story and its pages were buried in the prison garden. 13 – u u) Mandela was moved to Pollsmoor Prison, a more comfortable jail. 14 – l l) In the prison visiting room, Mandela and his wife were allowed to kiss for the first time in 21 years. 15 – k k) Mandela was moved to Victor Verster Prison, a prison guard’s house near Cape Town. 16 – t t) At the age of 71, Mandela was released from jail. 17 – d d) The first election for all the people of South Africa took place. 18 – j j) Mandela became President of South Africa. 19 – o o) The Children’s Fund was started by Mandela to help poor children in South Africa. 20 – i i) Thabo Mbeki became President and Mandela moved to Qunu for a quieter life. 21 – e e) Mandela began the 46664 music campaign to help people with HIV / Aids. 22 – n n) Makgatho, Mandela’s son, died of Aids at the age of 54. 23 – g g) At the age of 86, Mandela travelled to Trømso in Norway for the 46664 concert.
