Who is Nelson Mandela ?
Mr Mandela was born in 1918 into the
Madiba tribal clan - part of the Thembu
people - in a small village in the eastern
Cape of South Africa.
Early life


Born Rolihlahla Dalibhunga, Mr Mandela was
given his English name, Nelson, by a teacher
at his school.
He spent his boy hood looking after cattle

After completing university he joined a law
firm in Johannesburg where he worked as a
lawyer
Apartheid

Mandela was exposed to the evil system of
apartheid which discriminated against black
people. He pledged to fight against this and
joined the ANC
The African National congress

The ANC was trying to use non violent
methods to get the South African government
to change its policies.
Rivonia Trial 1964

Mandela was sent to prison for the rest of his
life. He was sent to Robben Island
Robben Island
18 Long Years

On Robben Island Mandela was treated very
badly. But he used this opportunity to educate
himself further and turned the prison into a
university
Freedom

February 1990, FW de Klerk announced that
Nelson Mandela would be released. He had
been in prison for 27 years
President of South Africa

In 1994 he became the first Black president of
South Africa
The Nobel Peace Prize 1993
"for their work for the peaceful termination of
the apartheid regime, and for laying the
foundations for a new democratic South
Africa"

1964 - Charged again,
sentenced to life
1990 - Freed from prison
1993 - Wins Nobel Peace

1994 - Elected first black
president
1999 - Steps down as leader
