Mr Mandela was born in 1918 into the Madiba tribal clan - part of the Thembu people - in a small village in the eastern Cape of South Africa. Early life Born Rolihlahla Dalibhunga, Mr Mandela was given his English name, Nelson, by a teacher at his school. He pledged to fight against this and joined the ANC The African National congress The ANC was trying to use non violent methods to get the South African government to change its policies. Rivonia Trial 1964 Mandela was sent to prison for the rest of his life. He was sent to Robben Island Robben Island 18 Long Years On Robben Island Mandela was treated very badly. But he used this opportunity to educate himself further and turned the prison into a university Freedom February 1990, FW de Klerk announced that Nelson Mandela would be released.
