Election of 1824

• Election of 1824- John Quincy

Adams vs. Andrew Jackson

• Jackson won popular vote but lacked electoral votes to be elected

• House of Representatives had to decide outcome

• John Quincy Adams- declared winner

• Jackson and his followers

(Jacksonians) accused Adams of stealing the Presidency

• Adams represented the Aristocracy

(class seen as best suited to run government)

Election of 1828

• Voting restrictions erased in 1828, Jackson represented the “Common Man” won election

• Jackson incorporated the “Spoils System” which led to Jackson picking his friends in government offices

• Jackson’s friends also became his cabinetknown as “kitchen cabinet”
