Old way, Caucus: Think of a few wealthy
powerful men making decisions in a cloudy
cigar-smoke filled room. “King makers”
New way, National Convention: Delegates
from all states chose the party’s nominee for
President. Nat’l Conventions are still held
today.

The Election of 1828
Spoils system: Jackson fired most government
employees and hired his supporters (**today, it is
normal for a Cabinet to be replaced and
ambassadors, but not regular government
employees). “To the victor belong the spoils”
Kitchen Cabinet: Due to the spoils system most of
his cabinet wasn’t qualified so he frequently met
with unofficial advisors regarding important
matters. (Not confirmed by the Senate)



Hated the National Bank. He thought it only
served the wealthy and used its power to
protect those people and their interests.
Jackson felt the national banking system was
“undemocratic”
Jackson eventually closes the national bank and
