3rd Grade Monday Memo-Ms. Hassell September 7, 2015 Reading/Language Arts Story for the week-Rugby and Rosie by Nan Parson Rossiter (Children can take reading book home in order to re-read weekly story. Please make sure book is returned the following day.) Reading-asking and answering relevant questions; cause and effect relationships; predicting Language Arts-parts of speech (verbs). Spelling-words with /o/ sound Writing-continue looking at the writing process (prewriting stage); begin reviewing cursive (paper position, pencil positions, slants, strokes) Math Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning-round whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred to approximate reasonable results in problem situations. Fact Fluency-each child has been given a pin so that he/she can access www.xtramath.org Students should use program everyday as part of his/her homework. Fact fluency will help with multi step math problems in the future. Religion Chapter 2 God Creator of Heaven and Earth-begin reading in our Faith First Book. Going over vocabulary for this chapter and discussing how we can be responsible stewards of creation. Prayer Test-September 11 Sign of the Cross Test and Glory Be Social Studies Geography-identify compass rose, grid system, and symbols to locate places on maps and globes. Create and interpret maps of places and regions that contain map elements, including a title, compass rose, legend, scale, and grid system. Me Box Project will be sent home Wednesday. Due September 18 Science Matter and energy-describe and classify samples of matter as solids, liquids, and gases and demonstrate that solids have a definite shape and that liquids and gases take the shape of their container. Homework Spelling – homework was given last Friday (due to holiday) and turned in on Friday. See homework sheet for directions. Use attached notebook paper to complete homework. For added practice, use list 4. https://www.spellingcity.com/eveliaavila/ Reading 20 minutes each night. (We will begin reading logs in October.) Math homework given Monday-Thursday. Some work will be a take home practice sheet other times it will work out of the math book. Wednesdays are our ice-cream days for third grade. Ice-cream costs $0.75. Please speak to your child about whether or not he/she may have ice-cream. I encourage students to eat their meal first before enjoying their ice-cream. Planners-elementary planners have arrived. They are $5. We will be using this as a way of keeping our assignments organized. The planner will be stamped daily (classroom behavior). Spirit Days-September 17 (Students should wear gray St. Mary’s t-shirt, school shoes, white or black socks and black or navy belt. Also jeans, knee-length shorts or skirts. Students should wear blue or navy belt) Volunteers Needed-some of the moms have started helping out distributing prizes after school. Email Ms. Hassell at jhassell@stmarys-temple.org.
